Entry for this year's London Ditchling Devil is now closed as we have a full field of 400 riders, however, there is a full programme of events coming up in the West London area, including: A Catholic Education (200km, June 16), The Jack Eason Struggle (200km, July 1) and the London Orbital Audax (300km, August 11). See http://www.aukweb.net for details.
N.B., My next event as Organiser is the London Orbital Audax. The nature of the route which includes a ferry crossing means the number of places available will be limited and I expect the event will be fully subscribed, so if you are interested in riding don't leave it too late!

A ride round london that takes you far from the Madding Crowd, taking in the sexy country shires of the South East and a ferry across the Thames Estuary. What Larks!
The event runs from Chalfont St Peter Community Centre (nearest Denham/Gerrards Cross) with our traditional 'no-mod-cons' accomodation offer for Friday and Saturday night (bring a sleeping bag). The entry fee includes light snacks at the start and finish in Chalfont (Breakfast and Supper!), the Ferry Crossing and the Village Hall control at Leaden Roding in Essex. Cafe Controls at Cranleigh, Hildenborough, Gravesend and Chiswell Green.
We are currently set to use the public Gravesend-Tilbury Ferry which naturally limits the number of riders, however if numbers warrant we will provide extra capacity by running the event in both directions simultaneously! More news on this later.
See the event website at LondonOrbital.Paudax.Com or just google, 'London Orbital Audax' for entry details.

Heads Up Londoners, sunny days are here again and it's almost time for the 8th edition of ...
With 400 riders on the road last year, the DItchling Devil is one of the best supported events in the AUK calendar, with a classic route of country lanes and fine views all London riders will enjoy.
The event controls are supported by local voluntary groups and cycling clubs who support the controls at Highbrook Village Hall (nr Ardingley), Upper Beeding (nr Steyning) and Chiddingfold (nr Haslemere) , providing the home-made refreshments included in the entry fee, and as this is an Audax we are talking real food: bacon rolls, pasta and lashings of tea and cake! Event veterans will know what to expect!
We used to finish in Richmond Park but last year we were bumped out by another event and so we moved to the Rose of York on the Petersham Road, near Richmond Gate, and it was so popular it's become a fixture. Chilling on the terrace with a pint of Sam Smiths makes a great end to the day. Kick off is from outside the Windmill Tearooms on Wimbledon Common as usual.
This is a rare chance to ride up to a major event from home, so leave the car behind and make a day of it. It's always a blast to ride down to the coast and back... it feels like you've been somewhere!
For entry details see ditchlingdevil.paudax or just google, 'ditchlingdevil'

Same great routes around the Chilterns and Newbury Downs from Chalfont St Peter, with a hilly 200km, a not so hilly 200km, and a sporting 100km for your delight, and the same sleepover options at the Community Centre on the Friday night.

Hi guys, I've just closed the entry list on the Ditchling Devil for 2014 as we are full to bursting. If you've not entered, and even if you have, keep a close eye out for some other great events that are coming up in the London area in the next few months, including
Jul 6 - The Jack Easen routes (60, 100, 200km)
Jul 20 - Suburban Breakout 100km
Aug 2 - Straight Outta Hackney 200km
Aug 17 - Tour of the Hills, 120km
Sept 7 - London Sightseerand of course...
Oct 4 - The AAAnfractuous 200km!
All the best, Paul

Thank you for that. The idea was to have an easy run in along the Mosel and the Rhein but the additional miles between Trier and Koblenz through the river undulation would not count as in an audax it is the shortest route between controls is that right?
Thats right. Sad but true...
However assuming you are doing this as a GPS DIY, you can add in extra controls to include some of the squiggly bits following the river and knock off a corner elsewhere to bring the on the road closer to the nominal distance. Do accept though that youre likely to be 10-12kmover, thats usual. You should be able to lose 10-15km though. That will get you home ~40minutes earlier!
-
Ive good news and bad news.
The good nes is that youve done it. See http://goo.gl/maps/My3yw and add in a few more controls to hit the every 50-80km as needed.
The bad news is that your on the road distance is nearer 430. But half is pan flat so what the heck....

This is the calendar version of the Audax UK Perm, The Boat Trip, which has been pressed into service to fill the gap in the calendar left by Terry Lister's legendary South Bucks Winter Warmer. Terry is having a year off and I hope he will be back next year with his popular events.
This is a very different event from the Ditchling Devil, being a no frills "x-event" but no the less fun for that. The aim is to give hardy "Round the Year" types a chance of a good run out and chalk up their December 200km . The event runs from The Wonder Cafe on the Uxbridge Road nr Hillingdon and has a pub finish at The Tichenham Inn a Wetherspoons Pub in Ickenham,* so there is a chance for a bite to eat and a pint after the ride.
The route itself is mostly "rolling flat" on good roads, just right for a winter's day, though there will be some lanes later on, so bring your lights. We head out of town via Great Kingshill and Chalfont St Giles to Quaintomn Memorial hall for 2nd breakfast, then it's off to Stoke Bruerne for lunch at the canalside Boat Inn. After lunch we head for home stopping for tea and cake at another canelside cafe, The Bluebell Cafe at Marsworth nr Tring before rolling on to The Tich for a pint to end the day. What's not to like?
It's an early 7:30 start to make the best use of the daylight hours and catch the cafe in the afternoon. The routesheet with rider notes and GPX are now on line on the Audax UK Website Clicky. Note that for logistical reasons the first control is now at Quainton Memorial hall, where the local volunteer group will be serving Bacon Butties accompanied by mugs of tea.
The start and finish locations are about 2km apart, literally at opposite ends of a Long Lane. For those driving, a free car park is available near the finish point, so park there and ride down to the start. See rider notes on the routesheet for details.

Bouquets all round, eyethangyou. I guess we'll have to run it next year now!

This years edition - the 9th - of the Anfractuous 200km and Nyctophobic 100km Audax are on Saturday, Oct 5. The events start from the Community Centre at Chalfont St Peter and route west through the Chiltern Hills and around the Newbury Downs
Audaxes are club events rather like sportives without the timing chips. The emphasis is on completing the route and having a great day, but if you want to get a move on, then that's fine too. For 200km events, fast types get round in 8~9 hours though 10-12 is more typical with the Lantern Rouge at 13.5 hrs.
The Anfractuous routes from Chalfont to Benson, Goring, Wantage, Lambourne, Pangbourne and back to Chalfont, whilst the Nyctophobic routes from Chalfont to Benson and back, with “café control” stops at Benson, Wantage and Pangbourne.
The routes are reasonably challenging with a good mixture of fast minor roads and country lanes, wooded climbs and rolling hills. This year there are two versions of the Anfractuous, the officially hilly AAAnfractuous with ~2900m ascent and the less hilly but equally challenging Less Anfractuous with ~2400m ascent.
Entry is £6 for AUK/CTC members, £8 for others (incl. AUK day membership).

My eyes! God, I wish you hadn't posted that. I'm sure that jersey fitted me when last I wore it. One for the fridge door; the diet starts as of this minute!
We had a great day. A few growing pains with almost three time the number of starters from last year (no, that's not another reference to my waistline) but our fantastic controllers coped magnificently. I fear Ed must have arrived during a "pasta gap". Next year we'll put a plate aside just for him, unless, of course, I decide to eat it before he arrives!
But seriously, this was a big day for us, and it was great to see you all on the road. And thanks to Ed for posting a fine collection of photographs. Really nice.
