Legs add a maximum of 8% of the overall forward propulsion.
Swimming is everything you do all put together. But it starts from the core.
Power comes from the core, hip rotation. piercing the water and causing the least amount if drag.I tried one of those leg floats at my swim this morning, what a difference. Only yesterday i was trying to kick less, which made a big difference, today i tried not kicking at all. A huge difference! Felt like i could really push my way though the water focusing on moving forwards rather than not sinking. Also helped with getting used to breathing on my left with proper rotation. Not sure how much i should be doing with the float as it actually felt a fair bit easier than without.

Ironmonger row - what a great pool! Only been to Putney, Golden Lane and Hampton, but that was a great swim this morning. Having looked through these posts, also slowed it down and let breathing dictate pace to the point that when i thought i should take a breather and do breaststroke, it felt better to quickly go back to front crawl. Also used the legs a lot less, and tried to do longer glides. Early days, but actually thinking about what i'm doing seems like it might pay off.

Had a reservation at the Sportsman a few years ago so we could pop in on the way to a weekend in Brugge. It was a snowy weekend when they advised everyone to avoid travel, but we went anyway. Drive down was totally fine but they closed and cancelled reservations for like the second time ever as their suppliers couldn't get through the snow :-( Good reminder though, must look into it.
Went to Menu Gordon Jones in Bath last weekend. Food is awesome. Possibly tries to cram in too many flavours, but pretty exciting food. Venue is a hole though. Looks like a converted estate agent. It's a surprise menu though. Never come across that before. You don't even get a menu to tell you what you're going to have, they just tell you when each dish arrives.

I've entered the Great North Swim 2 mile distance. My only swimming achievement to date is 750m open water in a wetsuit as part of a sprint tri. I built up to the distance in a 30m pool, so i could do 750m FC, but pushed off either end making it somewhat easier. In the actual event, i panicked, and ended up doing more than half BS.
I go swimming about once a week (will increase this) with my pool regime being something along the lines of one length BS, one FC, then after 5 mins, switch to one BS, two FC, building up to about 5 mins crawl to finish off with. Whole thing lasts 30 mins max before i'm pooped.
I'd like to bring a bit more structure to this / have a program to follow to achieve the 2 mile distance. Any tips / websites you can point me in the direction of that have training plans?
A lot of good tips in the previous pages, a crucial one seeming to be slow down! Let breathing dictate pace.
Will be spending the train ride up to Newcastle perusing the rest of these pages and looking at swimsmooth (although i couldn't find the training plan below listed on there).
Cheers!
I would avoid just ploughing up and down.
Swimsmooth.com has a load of set you could try.
An easy set to follow would be
4 x 100 warm up (4th length anything but fc)
4 x 100 drill sets of choice - catch one day, roll the next, recovery etc...
8 - 12 x 100 or 4 - 6 x 200 off whatever your threshold pace is - I'll do 100 off 2 minutes, my threshold pace being 1:25
2 x 100 warm down -

If you do opt for the 550, mine just arrived yesterday from here http://www.hdewcameras.co.uk/canon-eos-550d-camera--18-55mm-lens-492-p.asp and was best price (£479 inc P&P) i could find.
Anyone recomend a nice case? Less bulky the better, but sort of thing that would offer protection when i chuck it in my bag on my bike. Cheers.

Any ideas where i could get some gloves embroidered in a hurry?
Bought some leather cycling gloves for the lady and would like one word embroidered on each near the wrist. Hopefully means easier to access as they can be opened up here. Been in a few tailors who haven't been much help, with one saying it could be £1 a letter by hand or 10p a letter by machine. Machine would be ideal. By hand would mean it aint gonna happen.

Can anyone speak from experience for what the PS Rain Jacket is like? Hoping it's more like the wind/rain/stowaway jackets than the classic softshell.
Thanks,
More like the classic softshell as far as a remember (Boss ordered one then sent it back as couldn't justify cost). Pretty sure it's not that easy to stuff in your back pocket

My parents lived in Riyadh for 14 years, till about 2002 i think. I was there as a kid for four years 90-94ish.
They liked it. Tax free. While it is pretty weird and takes some getting used to, i think they had a pretty decent life. Lived on a compound called Arizona Golf Resort, which had a couple of hundred houses of westerners on it, a golf course, swimming pools, camels:
Socialising is a lot more 'make your own fun', so everyone becomes an expert at brewing their own beer, wine and everything else on the sly. Visiting each others houses or getting pissed in the desert with the Hash House Harriers.
Not sure how much cycling you could get done though... Probably get in trouble wearing shorts out on the roads.

Never heard of www.bikeshd.co.uk till a couple of days ago (keeping an eye out for my lady's Boardman), but it really is amazing how many dodgy looking bikes come up

Not sure on the size, but it's as is from the factory, so looks like this - http://www.boardmanbikes.com/fi/fi_road_comp.html
Ah, just found a photo
Has two white plastic bottle cages (thought it was 2, looks like one in this phot) and flat metal pedals, i.e. not clipless.
She's emailed the met bike task force and i'm keeping an eye on that bikeshd website.

Which pool was this? As a noob to swimming, the pace of various lanes can be so off putting. Fast lane is generally just a bit much for me, middle lane a wide variety and requiring a lot of weaving. Had a lovely swim at Marshall Street once the post work crowd started to drift off.
Might go give Oasis Leisure Centre a go after work today. Having worked on technique i can now swim 30 mins FC without too much bother, which feels an achievement, but i can see boredom creeping in. Might have to start looking into drills and what not to keep me interested.
What are you training for Nick-Nack?
