Funny you mention the type of people who arrive by boat (formerly under lorries). They’ve without exception experienced an incredibly harrowing journey. They’ve often been supported by their home community as the brightest and best hope of getting established somewhere else. I’ve worked on and off with them since little Alan Kurdi was washed up on a beach in 2015. I am constantly amazed at the difference between how they are portrayed and how they are. They’re always eager to work, and to make a difference to the communities they find themselves in.
Right now I’m sitting out a dance at the wedding of a Syrian boy who arrived here as a frightened young lad 8 years ago. I’ve seen how he’s got an education and a career and now is about to start a family.
In addition we have close on 1 million job vacancies and the demand for workers is projected to rise sharply. Why don’t we settle asylum claims quickly, allow people in the asylum system to work while their claims are being validated and return those who are obviously not refugees? -
I hope some folks will read and share this.

The article refers to New York’s third party certification. I guess it refers to this
(I assume you can access Spotify)
It’s an amazing story in itself.
The project’s website is here -
I worked for Hardys as a rod maker between 1976 and 1978. I used to lay up special carbon / fibreglass weaves for special projects (tournament casting) and assembled a lot of Palakona cane blanks for special orders. I must have whipped miles of maroon silk! I have a suspicion it was Gudebrod silk but the colour was altered by the varnish, as the silk wasn’t sealed first and went dark and semi translucent. The varnish had a very distinctive smell but came in Hardy branded bottles.

That was a lovely thing to watch. Took me back to the most influential angler I ever met. I used to do a lot of fishing, and learned all sorts of techniques from some of the most famous anglers of the time. I even made all my own rods including a couple from split cane.
But the guy I learned the most from never had a hook on his line. -
Here’s a few photos of some of the Kleins in my loft.
They’ve been there a while and have a film of dust on them.
The green one is a 1992 Quantum frame. An original, ordered as a special direct from the factory but never built up.
The purple one is a 2000 Plum Crazy, again a never built up frame.
The blue bike is a Quantum2 in Candy Teal. It’s complete 9speed DA with Hope hubs and Pianni rims built by Pete Mathews.
The dark purple is a 1996 Quantum with a new 11 speed Camapag Record group set and Reynolds Cirrus wheels. The frame has a slight ding in the seat tube.
The last bike is a 1992 Quantum in Pearl Black, with a mix of components, mostly Shimano 9speed with Mavic Classics pro wheels, Mavic SSC calipers and RPM stem and finishing kit.
There’s a few more, a 1992 Pinnacle, a 1995 Adroit, a couple of Mantras and a Navigator tourer if any of them are of interest to anyone. -
I have a 1995 57 cm Quantum 2 in Candy Teal with 9 speed DA. It’s in the loft, has been for a few years. I’d sell it for £850. If you’re interested I’ll take some pictures over the weekend.
I have a 2000 Quantum frame and fork, also in the loft. It’s wrapped up, brand new but I can’t remember the colour. It’s a pink/ purple fade. I’m happy to sell it too, £300
I have a few others. All the same size, a black one, a bright green and a Plum Crazy fade.
Just so you know they were either 55 or 57 cm frames. -
A scary quote from a passenger:
“ Suddenly the aircraft starts tilting up and there was shaking so I started bracing for what was happening, and very suddenly there was a very dramatic drop so everyone seated and not wearing seatbelt was launched immediately into the ceiling.
Some people hit their heads on the baggage cabins overhead and dented it, they hit the places where lights and masks are and broke straight through it.”
