Just in the process of entering this: http://cyclingtimetrials.org.uk/Default.aspx?&ge514__geka=8sW2Q7VKZmF8CUWP7ygm7riwpLFKNCEAIlX03Hp4_FhPDrktfqfkoQzxx15QQk__xHPLqh7iw6GhFuQIYBC-kw&ge514__gevi=XCpJGZoOsdoc9IDgR3GP4g&gv850__gvac=2&gv850__gvff0=58210&gv850__gvfl0=0&tabid=361
Turns out I couldn't enter this as my club (Uni of Manchester CC) hasn't paid its CTT affiliation for this year. Nice of them to cash my cheque anyway.

clean .. and looking like a track bike
This should do you fine, even better if you walk in with it over your shoulder with the wheels in covers.
As long as everything's pretty much in order (see helpful links available on the manchester velodrome website!) no-one will pay too much attention to gearing and crank lengths etc., as long as you generally look like you know what you're doing and don't draw too much attention to yourself.
Basically doing a taster session couldn't be easier and there's nothing "secret handshake" to it. Just be sensible!

The Regs are slightly more stringent than simply "road legal", you have to have bars >35cm wide with the brake lever fitted so it can be operated while holding the bars at their widest point, but I'd expect anybody planning to ride under CTT Regulations to have memorised them anyway :-)
The point I was going for was it's hardly revelatory that you need a brake, given that you need a brake to meet the verymost basic condition of your bike being legal to ride on the public highway. But yes, extra stuff also applies.

I've heard they operate a ticketless honesty system of payment?
I heard there was a 'three strikes' rule?
You should compile all this into some sort of guide book.
Long and short = you will get catched, they will take the (€50? €60?) fine off you. But tell 'em you didn't understand and some bloke told you blah blah, bet they never get anyone trying that.
The tickets didn't even seem that expensive when I went, l got a 4-week pass I think, this was a few years ago tho.

Nah, I like it when the tags turn over pretty quickly, and I like knowing them even if I don't go and get them. I don't think you can try too hard to get the right kind of level of difficulty without risking having something that no-one gets for ages, which I think is worse than it going the same day.
