Just took off the marathon supremes to save them for winter and put something nicer on for summer, that is 40 mins of my life I'll never get back (plus one pinch puncture) you must have fingers of steel/some good tyre levers. The A23/Supreme combo is pretty tight tyre/rim combo, think it might be time to invest in some boutique tyre levers before trying to do that at the roadside.

I am using this thread to voice my thought process and in the hope that people might have helpful suggestions.As I said I am very hopeful it is just that I have tightened the cones too much or that the chain line is off/too tight as it shifts really nicely. After ruling out these options I will try taking it apart and reassembling, perhaps after dunking in some oil, to move the viscosity balance of the oil/grease mix more towards the oil end of the spectrum.
I have to say the maintenance benefits to seem to be somewhat negated by the servicing process.

All seemed to go ok, including reassembly, however on first outing I am encountering some 'drag' issues (pedals turn when coasting). I am hoping this is down to a too tight chain/cone bearings rather than something that requires me to break it down again. Am a little concerned I may have used too thick an oil/grease, if so I am also hopeful this might resolve itself over a week or two. Any suggestions welcomed.

Anyone know anywhere to get a shimano reach adjustment shim kit for tiagra st 4600 shifters in the uk, or if not, can anyone definitively tell me if the specialized slim shim work in the tiagra st 4600 levers #smallhands

After a light(ish) road tyre for my cx bike. Want a tyre good enough to see a (positive) difference from the Continental Cyclocross Speed tyres currently on (which will go back on for winter/light off road/hard packed cx), happy to sacrifice pcte resistance as I seem to be quite lucky also happy to sacrifice some durability.
Current shortlist, of wider (might as well use clearance and rim width I have) road tyres
Schwalbe One (28)
Clement Strada LLG (28)
Vittoria Open Pave (27)
Continental GP4000S II (28) - thread favourite, how wide do these run?They are all around the same price, which doesn't help my decision so I thought I would canvas opinion here in the hope that someone has used one or more of these tyres for my intended use and can help(/tell me I am wrong/suggest another option completely), before I choose one at random?

has anyone regreased their alfine 8 speed hub, I have got to the stage where i have taken off the sproket and a black rubber seal, all the guides tell me I should now be seeing a knotched, large dust cap which should twist off clockwise. I see it (part 12 in the service guide) but it is covered by the flange cap, (part 30) do I have to take off the flange cap, if so, how? Guide is here.

That's what I thought, having sat on my friends Cannondale, in fact I think I would even have a slightly shorter stem than him (he had ~110mm stem), hence the thought that I would also need the Genesis, if it fits at all similar in a 56cm, rather than the 58cm currently on its way, if nothing else, the delay will allow me to accumulate some funds.

Stack and reach measurements are your friend. Do you have a road bike that fits?
Unhelpfully my only bike is commuter/do it all a flat bar Pompetamine, in medium, with a 130mm ~+10 degree stem with about 15mm of spacer under the stem. I can obviously measure/try and work out the stack and reach for this but not sure how helpful that would be given the different purposes I intend?
Using http://bb2stem.blogspot.co.uk/ for the pompetamine (from the on one geometry chart) and guessing a BB drop of 60mm (anyone know this?) gives

Decided to give the cx thing a go, probably, due to ease with my workplace, using Evans ride to work scheme to purchase it, as a result and because my commuter is a 700c disc bike (pompetamine) I have narrowed it down to between the Cannondale CAADX Disc 6 Tiagra and the Genesis Vapour Disc.
As I have a sensible do it all commuter, the idea is that it will be a racier option, my idea being to give cx racing a go, explore the local trails and possibly, stick some road tyres on/have my friend build a set of road wheels and have use it for some short, fast (for me) road rides.
Anyone like to help me decide between them/tell me I am wrong, this is the internet do I am guessing yes.
One of my main concerns is getting the right size, at dead on 6 foot, I seem to be exactly on the borderline between a 56cm and a 58cm in each, this is not helped by the local Evans having neither in either size. I have ordered in, to test ride/size a Vapour, my current preference, mainly due to colour :-) in a 58cm (size recommended by the sales assistant). Though having today sat on my friends caadx in a 56, with a longish stem, which felt definitely big enough, I am worried I should of got the Genesis in, in a 56cm first. Does anyone have any first hand experience of the fit difference between the frames. I am not good enough at bike geometry to attempt to work out the difference from the charts.

I hadn't specified a price, but am investigating acquiring the wheelset I linked to as why buy new when you can recycle/reuse and it seems like a good deal. If that doesn't work out/I break it I will investigate having a wheel built (I luckily have a wheelbuilding friend) and will no doubt be back for advice about hub/spoke/rim choice.

I have been the happy owner of a flat bar 'stock' pompetamine with alfine 8 for a year now. I am considering acquiring a 'spare' single-speed rear wheel, both to give me the option to run the bike single speed and to give me the option of being able to service the rear hub(due in a month/two)/gear cable(the cable has half snapped (replacement cable set ordered) which has enforced the realisation of how screwed I would be if I were to have bike downtime) and still have a bike to commute on.
Before I do this I wanted to check that I have my requirement list correct so that the wheel can indeed be a straight swap replacement.
If I get a 135mm singlespeed wheel, with disc mount, or have one built, should the chainline be automatically fine, or will I need to play with the eccentric bottom bracket (if so is this difficult).
The Alfine hub has a 15mm bolted skewer, with anti-rotation washers, will a quick release work ok?
The current disc rotor, for use with the bb7's is 160mm, will any 160mm rotor be ok with this set up?
Do these wheels (rear in particular) match my requirements?

Might get that for the home (Is it the Simson tyre mate). Luckily I have a PDW 3Wrencho in my commuter bag for my Pompetamine rear axle, the lever on which was my saviour, but I don't necessarily want to be carrying that on the road bike, both for the weight and because I will forget to swap it between bikes.
Is the VAR lever any good for a similar (to the tyre mate) saddle bag option? Possibly coupled with one of these or these (a cheaper option?) if the VAR lever is no good.
While I am at it, any recommendations for patch kits, the puncture I got changing tyres is the first I have had in many years.
