Ridden mechanical for a year in all conditions. Had a slight issue with water freezing my cables up last winter (-10C), but otherwise no problems. I put plenty of grease under the rubber hood at the end of the cablesock. No problems since. Top up after a couple of powerwashes.
From what I've read, spyres are lighter, and wear the pads more evenly but lacks overall power. Modulation is only on par with the BB7's so it doesn't buy you any finesse.

I've also heard the opposite of Souls experience.
The TRP parabox system uses the same stuff and generally they are liked.
I'd take a guesstimate and say BB7 gives 80-90% of the experience. Hylex wount save you any weight, but give that little bit extra in terms of braking, and hopefully ease the maintenance.

Gumwall is not a good idea for non-dentist riders like most of us. They are not very pretty after a surprisingly few runs in the mud. And the sides scar fairly easily. All blacks will keep the fresh look for longer.
If you want gums because it looks good. Think again. If you want it because they grip well, fair enough. Also, don't save money on tyres. Tyres are THE most important component on the cx bike. Don't save money there if you actually likes to ride cyclocross.
AND you can get Grifo's here for £40. http://www.bike24.com/1.php?content=8;navigation=1;menu=1000,4,22,35;product=22166

I'd wait for the new pomp. Should hopefully be a slight upgrade for SSCX purposes. Great value.
Next best thing is to try and find a second hand frame with BB30/PF30 and fit an EBB.
Third option is to look at what purpose built frames are available right now. That 8 Bar TFLSBERG look kinda promising. A bit like a Pre Cursa Cross. 130mm which is truly the better option. 488euro.
