Update on the Asaklitt, the one which has seen the most use has developed a fault where the mechanism will not return into the barrel unless by the power of gravity, very annoying, especially if you lock it to the bike the wrong way up. I emailed Clas Ohlson to see if I could get an exchange from the Cardiff store next time I go over there, and they've said they're going to send me a new one, free of charge, and I don't have to send the old one back. That's winning customer service for a £17 lock.

Concrete, done a few years ago, but I guess they left the sub-structure in place. That was my thoughts, so gone with another outfit who seem to know their onions.

Tiles were re-done around 2007 I think, I guess they've just left the boards in place and laid felt on top of that (hopefully!)

Back door needs replacing, DG company initially wanted to carry the fan light window on the right over as the top of the door level, but this only give a door height of about 1900. I know this is over 6 foot, so shouldn't cause me a problem, but my gut is that it'll have me ducking everyime I walk into the garden.

My feeling is it would be better to brick up small window on the right, and run the door up as high as possible.

Also, cat flaps in sealed unit... they say they can do it, but better to have it set in a solid panel at the bottom presumably, for the longevity of the sealed unit (door will be glazed as far as possible)?

Don't those use microshift shifters as standard? Could swap the shifter out to the dyna-sys compatible version I mentioned on here recently and use a modern 10 speed mtb mech.

Nice one, that sounds like a decent innings. I would have thought I dunking would fuck up a more expensive hub anyway.

Cartridge bearings though. Going to see if I can get an M756 polished.

So is it a case of stripping the hub out of the wheel and sending back to the factory? Do you think anything else would have faired much better and would it have been worth it (I only ask as I'm about to buy the same hub) How many miles do you think you got out of that?

Nope, I want blingy. Well, utilitarian is fine for the hub, but the finish needs to be properly polished. I could get one of them polished up by a machine shop I suppose. Either that or someone convinces me of the merits of cartridge bearings.

If you don't have any luck with them, try B&M direct, they've been really good on service in the past for me.

Couldn't sleep last night so just got up early and rode in to work at dawn. Makes for such a nice commute when no one's up yet and caught an amazing sunrise over Bristol harbourside. No camera phone so you'll have to use your imagination. Man do I feel spaced out though.

Good points all round, the whole idea is putting me off. Fine from a commuting standpoint, but fuck that when bonking on a wet day because you've already ridden 80 miles and have another ten to get to the hostel / campsite you're booked into. The trade-offs in a regular system aren't that bad, especially when I'm not convinced that there is any need for an armored 'Marathon' type tyre when touring, more than at any other time, though to be fair that's not based on a wealth of experience.

edit - the clutch is in the mech, not the shifters, if you didn't know that already.
edit edit, run a short cage mech on that cassette and I wouldn't have thought chain-slap will be a problem.

That's good to know, maybe a patch kit and a tube of superglue would be good enough on tour, a tube too for emergencies maybe.

I guess it goes against received wisdom of keeping things as simple as possible and relying on tried and tested technology à la frame pumps, bar end shifters etc. If you rip a sidewall on a tubeless, it's a messy afair to sort out by all accounts. That said, I'd still want a tubeless compatible rim for off-road funtimes.

Sweet, won't ever be running as small as that I shouldn't imagine. What's your take on tubeless for touring? Did I read that you're running tubeless on your NFE?
