When I set up a front mech I always use this method;
Rear mech cable connected and tight-ish (this is just so you can shift onto the largest rear sprocket), front cable not connected at all so no tension on the front mech.
Shift rear gears onto the largest sprocket and adjust front mech inner limit screw so chain clears by a fraction.
Connect front cable to mech making sure the gear shifter is set fully over for the inner ring.
Tension front cable so you can pull it about 1-2cm at the midpoint of the downtube. Too much tension and you won't be able to shift the front mech all the way across.
Shift rear mech to a middle cog, then front mech onto outer. Now shift rear mech onto smallest.
Now your chain is as far out as it needs to be so adjust the front mech outer limit screw to bring the cage close to the chain without rubbing. Front mech cable should be pretty tight now too.
I then go on to finish off setting the rear mech up.I have had issues before when the limit screws seem to have no effect, it was usually when the cable tension wasn't set right so the shifter couldn't move the chain all the way across.

Shimano Dura ace 7700 bottom bracket. Italian threaded cups. Overall good condition apart from some of the notches chewed up on one cup from using the wrong tools. Will go in fine with the correct spanner. £15 posted.

Aksium race in silver for shimano 9/10/11 speed. Mileage unknown but great condition, the braking surfaces are totally flat, they run true and are silky smooth. Come with almost new Giant P-R2 flat guard 700 x 23 tyres, tubes and skewers. I am in Birmingham so £100 including delivery and paypal fees. £10 less if you don't want tyres & tubes.

105 FC5502/5505 hollowtech chainset for octalink bottom brackets. 170mm length. Light scratches and heelrub but overall decent condition. 53/42 chainrings, outer a bit worn but plenty of life left, inner looks virtually unused, with chainring and crank bolts. Also included a decent condition dura ace 7700 italian thread bottom bracket. £30 ppgift posted in uk.

Very nice hand made Danish frame, made from aluminium 7020 tubing with full carbon forks. 2003/4 vintage and was pretty high end back in its day. Weight for the bare frame is just under 1.5kg. Compact geometry and the actual sizes are TT 54cm c-c, ST 46cm c-c. I am 5'8" and was riding it with a 90mm stem. Takes 31.4seatpost and english thread bottom bracket. Condition is very tidy for year, a few very small marks. Unfortunately has a small shallow dent in the top tube, pictured as best I could. Was there when I got it and doesn't affect the ride in any way. Covered it with a sticker and forgot about it.
Comes with full carbon forks which have about 20mm of steerer left after stem fitted. Headset bearings are a bit notchy but not noticeable when on the move. Steerer bung fitted, spacers and top cap included. Also has downtube cable adjusters, seat clamp and seatpost shim to allow 27.2 posts to be fitted.
