I think the people of Alsace Lorraine wouldn't identify themselves as coming from 'Alsace Lorraine', which isn't really a thing in France. (Correct me if I'm wrong French people - I did used to live in Lorraine)

For what it's worth, which I'm aware is little, I don't even identify England as a nation. To be a nation you need international recognition with things like UN seats and embassies. We should have a UK national football team for all events, not just the Olympics.

Do you identify Catalunya as a nation? Or Scotland?

I should point out, again, that nationalism has not always been associated with jingoism. It once represented a progressive counterforce to autocratic rule by a colonising, oppressive, or backward authority.

I know it was an accident of history, but nationalism (in the sense of self determination) had a large part in undoing pretty much all the large european empires (Ottoman, British, French, Hapsburg, Russian (twice)...)

no, he's cut it in the horizontal to stop the legs flexing when you're planing (for example) which exerts horizontal forces along the top of the bench. the dado (properly called a groove in the UK) is for sturdiness, not to support the cross member. the screws are more than enough to keep it from dropping off(!)
