Unfortunatly as you say cheap silicone plugs/jewellery harbours bacteria and can really upset new and old piercings. Acrylic or PMMA is generally OK for most people but still causes heaps of issues.
I have always been against putting any kind of antibiotic cream on a fresh or upset piercing as it does not let the wound air and can also just generally irriate it. If you do encounter an issue like this again I would try 1/4 tea spoon of maldon sea salt (any salt as long as no iodine is added) to 250ml of freshly boiled water (let it cool) and do soaks 3-4 times a day. Emu oil is a great healer, and by far my favorite healing aid. I have also found that switching to wood or horn after a slight irritation or infection can really help.

Ugh guns, some of the yuck things I have seen and had to sort out from guns being used. Like a navel being done with a gun, had to dig it out - then relised the butterfly was STILL in there pretty deep (about 2-3mm under the first dermal layer) - took ages and she was left with a pretty nasty scar, luckily when we repierced it 6 months later I managed to hide the scar a bit.. she learnt her lesson
