Warning serious vintage bike nerdery below;
Yes it's definitely original paint so the rollers, shifter brazon and Simplex/Agrati ends are original too.
The Juy 53 went on sale in '52 (I've seen its date given as '51 too) so it's probable this is how it was equipped
A Cyclo Benelux 2 cable rear also used a double pulley but clamped to the chainstay, Huret made a similar design in 1950 (I reckon Simplex ripped it off) but that didn't attach to a rear derailleur hanger
The detective work was the funnest part of this project.I know about the crazy flam paint jobs of late 40's early 50's bikes, Paris (Rensch) was a leader with these. I think Gillott were a bit less radical and I'm pretty much decided to return the bike to as original as I can.

Hilary Stone just wrote this to me elsewhere
"Argos can do quite a thin paint if requested and will do a mix of gloss and satin lacquar which is much closer to older paint – That's what I normally ask for… And if you ask for Hilary's type paint, they will know what you after."
So I guess I'm going to have to put some shit on the block.

Yeah. I don't want wear and tear or 'patina' (gah) I'm not interested in fakery, I just don't want syrupy thick clear coat pooling around those crisp lugs.
Modern paint is shit though, I think the thick clear coat is to hold it on.
Enough prevarication, I need to get it done.
I was hoping for a recommendation for another possible painter but it sounds as though it's still Argos or BJs are Atlantic Boulevard still a thing? -
-
Jackson's sent me a pic of some box lining they'd done and it looked good, they respray a lot of Jack Taylor's apparently.
Argos's box lining is only £25 more than BJs but all the other bits add up, single colour paint is £155! and they charge £35 for putting on decals.I'm sure their work is beautiful but I actually want it to look a bit less posh.

The frame was built for a cable operated front derailleur controlled from the right side (double pulley wheel on top of BB shell, Simplex braze-on for shifter on DT). This was pretty high tech in '52 and racers stuck with rod op front derailleurs for a while so there arent many around.
Frame also has a rear Simplex hanger so after some research I realised I needed a Juy 51, a Juy 53 (unobtainable) and a Simplex double shifter. -

Colourtech don't do box lining unfortunately.
They resprayed my Cougar a few years back - pearl white and did a great job.Seems only Bob Jackson, Argos and Atlantic Boulevard do proper hand box lining.
I'd be happy to find someone else. I know a thinner finish can be done - but I need to find someone who 'gets it'.
If I can convince BJ to do a thin clear coat they'd be first choice, they do a lot of Jack Taylors and they're nearly £100 cheaper than Argos! -

It's a bit of a nightmare tbh.
(FWP)
I want to keep the thin finish and low key paint.
There aren't too many places that can do the box lining. Bob Jackson can but they told me;'We cannot and will not try to make the paint work look old and thin. This will be a high gloss finish to a high standard, Why would you not want it looking good?? If you want it looking older with thin clear coat etc keep it as it is.'
So after finding £250 to get it painted
😬😖 I'm going to build it up and ride it on dry days wearing a wool jersey with front pockets.I've been collecting parts for it since before they were worth stupid money. I'm actually unsure how cool it is to use that front derailleur (not because it's worth crazy dolly but because there aren't many surviving)

Off topic, but you bunch of tarts can probably answer this;
http://www.lfgss.com/post3664304-47727.html -
If i've got standard road bars (so stem is 26.4mm clamp size) what size crosstop lever fit 'em?
edit - I was just presuming 26.0mm was right, but just wanted to check before I splurge.
The 26 mm is the stem clamp size, where your crosstopTM levers clamp the bar's od will have decreased (the stem clamp area will be sleeved or bulged) down to 23.8 mm IIRC.

Fenton are good at this sort of thing:
http://www.fenton-islington.co.uk/
Don't know about his mod credentials though. :)
Thanks old chap.
I emailed them yesterday and got a reply today from a Cordula Wagner (she's not a mod) which I almost deleted as another porn site fishing email (how do they get my address?).
Altering the Sta-prest will be £30 which is probably reasonable but also more than I bought the trousers for.
Any non-artisanal alteration services out there? -
Anyone have experience getting trousers tapered in London (pref Central or South)? I have a pair of vintage Levis Sta-Prest I want sorting. They need to be taken in equally on the inseam and outer to keep the permanent crease in the right place and the inseam is overlock stitched.
Any old mods out there?
Doh.
