Campag 10 shifter
Old Campag derailleur (pre 2000)
Shimano 10 sp cassette.
(I think I’ve got that right)There’s also an 8sp version using shimano derailleur and mech.
Bike is currently 8sp campag shifting over re-spaced shimano 8 cassette.

This is the double I’m selling, I’m keeping the NOS one. I need to make the bolt and bushing for the patina one to sell it- when I get my arse in gear (pun)

What you have is the Simplex etc braze on, like on my frame. The campag braze on has 2 flats and a different thread.

The braze on is different for Campag.
The Huret/Cyclo/Simplex braze on has a specific pre ISO thread (M5 x1.0mm) and a different shaped boss.Juy 51/53 Will need a right side double shifter which are scarce and fetch £60-100 (or more, I hope -I’m going to sell one shortly).
A 51 with suicide changer would be right. -

I have a Durax crankset (no rings) you can have for postage- I’ll dm you a pic tomorrow.My ‘52 Gillott has down tube lever braze on, not uncommon after the war, I don’t know much about pre war bikes but they were on better bikes then too.

They’re called Tubular latches and the dimension you need is the backset - the distance from the faceplate to the centre of the spindle hole.
The spindle hole will be 8mm although there are still imperial sized ones around (shudder) which are half a mm smaller.
Window locks use a smaller size again 6mm (?). -
Talking of serviceability and obsolescence; It’s great that you can buy spares for a design Duravit haven’t sold for about 15 years.
But a hundred and twenty five fucking quid for a bog seat‽I should have just bought a new bog.

Being lost started off as amusing, especially as we realised we’d escaped a probable MMMF situation, then we got irritated, the high wore off and we started getting a bit concerned.
There’s a lot to love in the Barbican but it was never user friendly. -

Yup, the whole lower porcelain bit is called a pan here.
I’m not au fait with Canadian plumbing so I don’t know, but US toilets’ wastes go down through the floor, the soil pipe comes up flush (har har) and this wax ring goes on it that the porcelain sits on top of. It’s a weird and ancient system that continues probably because it just works, and it’s dead cheap.In California the local building code decreed that waste pipes must all be copper or cast iron.
The cast iron joints were simple sockets you had to pack with oakum (like hemp string) then seal with molten lead.
Now that’s how the local union keeps plumbers in business and stop DIY!
Didn’t stop me having a crack at it though.

I love those flats.
Royal Doulton (Edit: it’s Twyfords and you can still buy them but I think they’re NOS) still make those weird but excellent vertical basins.
😂I got lost leaving a flat there in the early hours very much the worse for wear with (now ex) Mrs. Bird, we literally wandered around trying to find a way out for a lifetime until we heard footsteps and ran to them in desperation.

Built in obsolescence is depressing.
Repairing your leaky kitchen mixer tap with a 20p O ring is fucking golden though.The replacement parts or whole thing are so cheap (and often shit) that repair is pointless or impossible.
I called an appliance repair guy out to fix a Miele oven, he said it basically wasn’t worth the repair, I asked which he recommended- ‘the cheapest one that works, they’re all crap and break in 5 years’ he said with a devastated look.I used to manage a 1929 apartment building in the States.

I could still buy parts for the concealed shower/bath mixer valves from the same company in Michigan that made them 70 years before; valve seats, washer jumpers etc.
I was keeping these 1930s bathrooms working.
Same with the apartment door locks, I could order new cylinders and whole mechanisms, exact matches for the originals.Mind you that was 20 years ago, and things were very different then.

I didn't really know you could sand the lacquer off engineered flooring.
I used a Bona belt sander, they’re pretty gentle if you learn how to finesse them. The finish veneer needs to be thick, and not all engineered flooring is made equal.
I think there may have been a chamfer pre sanding. 🤷 -
Mini Bird’s elder brother (just turned 16!) used to follow me around with a similar toy tool kit.
At the time I told my mate (who runs a posh building firm) about it, he said ‘that’s no good you want to get him a corporate lawyer kit’Edit; - he’s about to start Chemistry, Physics and 2 Maths A levels so I think he swerved the builder genes - although he’s great at digging a footing for a wall and mixing up render.

I think it must be a very flattering photo.
It actually looks pretty bad.
It’s a pine faced engineered board that I sanded the original lacquer finish off I did it the weekend Wills snd Kate were married and finished it with white osmo. In the intervening years it has been mopped and scrubbed so much that it is now just bare wood.
When my current program of renovations is complete (🤣) I’m planning on finishing it with lye and scandi mopped on soap finish. -

I have a 90s racing triple derailleur, I’m not sure how big a sprocket it will shift on to, I guess I can use one of those mech hanger extender doodads, capacity will be an issue too maybe - I’ll be changing the triple for a ‘sub compact double’ TA cyclotouriste 48/3?
