hmm...
Crucial seems to be telling me that I can go to 16gb ram in my late 2011 13" macbook pro. I thought the limit was 8?
Any ideas?
edit: just read the page a bit more (tl;dr and all that), apparently crucial have tested it and it works. It's freaking expensive though, £185 for the 2x8gb upgrade vs £36 for the 2x4gb upgrade.

chris,
as long as your computer can hold the two drives, it's fairly straightforward. Once you've got the two hard drives installed, then you can simply insert the OS disk that came with your computer, or hold down Command - R while powering on if you're running lion (probably), and select whichever of the two drives you want to install the OS on.
I'm assuming you want to run the OS off the SSD and have the stuff on the large HDD to improve performance and whatnot?
two things. 1, I'd recommend checking the warranty status of your machine (if it's a mac), because fooling around with the internals of macs will potentially void any warranty you have, if only for the internal hardware you're removing/changing.
2, have a back up of your stuff, on a third, separate drive. This would allow you to do a clean install of the OS on the SSD, and then wipe all the unnecessary OS information off the old HDD, then transfer the files and folders back across.
As for itunes and other stuff, as long as itunes knows where to look for your library, it doesn't matter where it is. It could be on the same drive as the application, or on a networked drive, usb stick, etc.

^Thanks so much for the advice JonoMarshall, shall give it a go!
Actually, as long as the hard drive you have is larger than the hard drive in the iMac, you don't even need to partition it.
Once time machine has finished backing up, it'll have a folder the size of the used part of your hard drive, but you'll be able to use the remaining space as you see fit.
The advantage of partitioning is that it may avoid complications with backing up once the hard drive is quite full.

I seem to have lost the plot in Skyrim. Literally.
I'd completed finding Esbern and the Karthspire camp and the "Dragon Wall" (or whatever that was), and then Delphine and Esbern buggered off back to Riverwood.
Since then, nothing. No sight nor sound of the main quest.
I've become Thane of most places, acquired houses all over, and am mostly walking the Earth and doing random things.
The only quests I have active are Miscellaneous ones.
Is there a way to somehow get back onto the main quest? I've done perhaps 50%+ of the game and am loathe to start again, but kinda feel like abandoning instead of wandering aimlessly.
Have you gone back to the greybeards? if memory serves you need to go and talk to arngeir or whatever his name is, and after being a bit of a defeatist prick "maybe the world is meant to end" he teaches you a shout that lets you get to the very top of the throat of the world.

No, it's just not very obvious what synchronises with what. Same for iTunes. Fuck it - I prefer to do thing manually.
The other thing, I'd like to merge Gmail/Google contacts with iPhone contacts. Right now I've got many double entries - some with e-mail addresses and some with phone numbers only. Pain in the arse. Now, when I also wanted to synchronise my desktop with iCloud it tells me that I can either keep Google contacts or delete everything and synchronise with iCloud. Fuck knows what's there really.
Hmm, best way to do it is get all of the contacts into one place, say address book on your mac. Then, create a smart group with some rules to help differentiate contacts with the same name that have been edited at different times.
Once you've got your contacts the way you want them, chose a way to sync them AND STICK TO IT.
Duplicates come about when you start syncing some things using iCloud, others using google, yet more by syncing by plugging in via USB, etc.

I've tried many approaches between two iPhones, two iPads and a mac desktop. The effect is multiplieid files and contacts, lost bookmarks, lost contacts, some unneccesary phots on one iPad and so on. It's shit and I'm more and more disillusioned wit Apple.
The effect is that I got an Android phone so I can actually use an instant upload of photos to my computer and make use of my google contacts. The contact/bookmark/calendar sync as performed by Apple is dubious and frustrating. You're doing it wrong then :)

Right so, in the absence of an xbox 360 in my parent's house, I have resorted to playing Daggerfall.
Took me a long time to create a character that didnt hugely suck. Character creation is frought with complications, and choosing a custom character is highly recommended. I found this guide which helped hugely. I'm now out of the main dungeon and tearing shit up in daggerfall city centre.
The game is available free (if you can find it) and runs surprisingly well using DOSbox on mac or PC. I'm running it on OS 10.7.2.
Its pretty big, the game area is twice the size of the UK, full of towns and villages and procedurally generated (ie dull as fuck) terrain, and thousands upon thousands of randomly generated quests.
the combat controls are surprisingly intuitive. Hold down a button on mouse or keyboard and move the mouse to swipe with a weapon. The direction of the mouse corresponds to the type of slash. Really fun and intuitive! Not bad for a 15 year old game.

If all you want to transfer is contacts/calendars/photos and data from a few apps, that's not going to push you over the 5gb limit. Unless of course you have a shedload of pictures or something.
You can customize what's backed up to iCloud. It doesnt have to be everything on your phone.
First off, in the iCloud menu in settings on your phone, only turn on contacts and calendars. That should sync that data with the cloud and allow you to access it from the iPad.
with photostream, it may not sync photos older than the activation of iCloud. You might be able to simply create a new album in the photos app, dump everything in it, and that then might force it all into your photostream, but the other way to do it would be to have camera roll as an option in the iCloud backup, and then set the ipad up from new and restore it from said iCloud backup.
The app data is a little more tricky. You will need to turn on iCloud backup and then change the apps/data you want to sync. I suppose it may not let you turn it on if you're using more than 5gb of data to do so, even if you want to customize what you sync, but i'm pretty sure it gives you that option during the activation process.

I have two characters in Skyrim, a lvl 29 mage and a lvl 17 rogue. Just made some exquisite elven guilded armour (nothing special, I know, but I didn't touch armour making with my previous character). I love the complexity of the recipes for more advanced armours and weapons.
I feel there is a need to get into alchemy, to start to create poisons and shit. I just can't bring myself to spend the perk points on it though. Every time i'm faced with the decision: become satisfyingly more deadly with dual wielded daggers while sneaking, or advance a tiny weeny smidgeon in alchemy.
Also, the skill seems to advance slowly, despite the 20% bonus conferred by the thief stone. And its fcking boring making shit potions.

Fetch and Push.
Fetch gets the mail at the specified time, Push sends mail whenever mail is received at the server, dependent on server side traffic, blah blah blah.
If push is turned on, this takes dominance over fetch. But if you want to make sure you receive emails as quickly as possible, then set fetch to 15 minutes and have push turned on.
If you're using Gmail, then make sure you have it set up as an exchange account using m.google.com as the server. Or use the gmail mail app.

So fucking annoying being unable to play flash media on the iPad. When are they going to sort this out?
Never.
Flash will die a well deserved death and along with any webpage slow enough to not move to a far superior standard of video streaming.
Either that or Adobe will follow through with server-end video processing, and will stream all flash video content to devices cloud-style.

No skyrim tonight. Gf is round which is nice.*
She is working till 10pm tomorrow so I'll be rimming myself into the sky for at least 2 hours, and I have the whole day to plan what I'm going to do. I'm thinking I might start on the civil war questline (as imperial. Fuck these racist northern separatist bastards).
*how is it that all of us rim-nerds have other halves?
ouch :'(
