Going back to the whole alu failure in frames.
When I worked at cyclescurgery, we used to see a cheap marin hybrid once every week or so. Normally ridden into the shop with complaints about noises while riding. On one occasion the seat tube was completely sheared off.. makes me wonder a) how it was ridden and b) how the rider didn't notice.
The best was a story I heard about a very expensive Marin aluminium/scandium hard tail mountainbike, which developed a vertical crack down the HEAD TUBE. I'd have loved/hated to have been the shop assistant deal with that.

My new bike.
Used to belong to eyebrows, been adjusting and tweaking it this week (until it snowed).
I'm pretty sure this is the nicest bike I've ever owned...
Not much of a project, all I've done is stick some pedals, a smaller chainring, a new seatpost and some handlebars on it, but I think this is a keeper. :D
Next things to do: clean the wheels, get a matching thomson stem? Upgrade to an actual arione as opposed to the P-X?

I end up trying to figure out what equation I got wrong last night, only to do this stupid diagram;

reach remain constant, but BB end up staying the same, if not further back (example is extreme but enough to show my point), what point am I missing?
The point you're missing is that, as that diagram shows, the reach stayed the same after changing the forks and lowering the front end.
Because you thought the reach had got shorter, you moved the saddle back, which increased the reach, thereby facilitating the need for a shorter stem.
If you'd changed nothing you probably wouldn't have even noticed.

I think I'll just get some disc tabs brazed on.
I need a brake, always have, always will.
Don't want it to be a trick bike, and theoretically a fat tyred 26 should have the same diameter as a 23c 700c, and since I love taking it through the nearby forest already, may as well make it as practical as possible!
Will probably just get some 38c cross tyres.Henry - wanna buy some rokshox forks (not sure which model, not particularly high end), complete with an avid juicy 3 and a hardly used rotor? :D

Oh ed...
I think you need to be prepared to take in second opinions every now and again, rather than learning a particular way of doing something and then extolling it as gospel much to the ire of others who are more educated on the matter.
That's pretty much your only weakness, that's why people get frustrated. Simple as.

There's two ways to fit a headset. One with a press, which you can make yourself (threaded billet, some big washers and nuts, and a big turny gubbins. The other is with a block of wood and a mallet.
My advice, hop on the bus to B&Q and buy the bits you need for the former. The latter tends to be a bit hair raising and probably not that good for the frame, your headset or sanity.
