Can't comment much on the mountain bike part, but having had both front and back baby seats, the front one is better for a smallish child. I have one like this and he loves it.

I would not ride with a kid in my backpack, the seats protect them better and i would be worried I might fall on them in the case of a mishap.

Re the spider bite; you want to reduce inflammation so it does not get infected; some anti histamines and Ibruprofen were given to me by the GP for this purpose. Mine still got infected though and then needed antibiotics.....
