Full details of the Terns & Conditions posted here.
(as listed for the 2010 NY Fahgettaboudit® Lock)
-
if anyone has more concrete details on the Kryptonite guarantee terms & conditions, please do post them, or PM.
For those who are interested, here are the details of Kryptonite's "Anti-Theft Protection Offer", as listed in the leaflet included with their 2010 New York Fahgettaboudit® Lock.
**KRYPTONITE ANTI-THEFT PROTECTION : TERMS AND CONDITIONS
**
If the bicycle is stolen because of the opening or breaking of the Kryptonite lock **by force **.£2500 limit in the UK
Within 15 days of lock purchase, send Kryptonite:
(a) Lock registration form
(b) Copy of your lock receipt
(c) Copy of your bicycle receipt OR signed and dated authorised dealer appraisal of market value, not including accessories.
(d) Proof of bicycle registration with a national bicycle register (unclear, may not be required for UK customers)All should be sent registered mail.
In event of theft:
(1) Report to local police within 72 hours
(2) Mail notice of the theft to Kyrptonite WITHIN 7 DAYS OF THE THEFT (registered mail)
(3) Report the theft to your insurance company (no time given)
(4) Send the following to Kryptonite within 90 days:[a] broken lock (required - no lock, no payment) ** at least one key [c] police report [d] evidence you have notified your insurance company (if covered)Kryptonite requires proof of payment from your insurance company prior to paying your deductible.
[B]LIMITATIONS**
Protection expires after ONE YEAR from postmark date of registration.
(1) Kryptonite will not be liable if the frame of the bicycle or the object to which it was locked was dismantled or cut, or if the lock was not broken or opened by forceful means.
(2) Protection does not apply to a theft where the bicycle is subsequently recovered, to vandalism, or theft of personal property. The bicycle is only covered in the country of registration
(3) It can be transferred to a new bicycle.
(4) The maximum amount payable to one individual is limited, regardless of how many locks or bicycles that individual has registered.
It doesn't seem that complicated, as long as you get the paperwork off quickly after buying, and do the kinds of things you'd have to do anyway for your insurance company in the event of a theft. Just as long as the lock has been forced (does lock picking count?), and the thieves have left bits of it lying around, you should be covered. That's covered for "deductibles" only, and not the accessories.
Certainly not a substitute for proper insurance, if you want full cover, but perhaps a handy extra.

Good Kryptonite deal at Amazon (March 2010) [ame="http://www.amazon.co.uk/Kryptonite-York-Fahgettaboudit-Mini-Lock/dp/B000OZ9VLU/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=sports&qid=1268854175&sr=8-2"]Fahgettaboudit® Lock ("Mini") : now £44.90[/ame]

P.S. Amazon just dropped the price for the [ame="http://www.amazon.co.uk/Kryptonite-York-Fahgettaboudit-Mini-Lock/dp/B000OZ9VLU/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=sports&qid=1268854175&sr=8-2"]Fahgettaboudit® Lock ("Mini") : now £44.90[/ame]
They really don't like Parker International.
[Edit] Price has gone back up again, Parker equivalent. Keep an eye out ...

Anybody want to do the research for that then post it on here?
I'll have a go, see what I can pull together.
Good news on the insurance thread RE. Kryptonite: hope is not lost, the Fagh is coming! And apparently Evans Cycles will honour the Evo Mini on their insurance, even if it is no longer rated by Sold Secure (partly perhaps because they are still mis-selling it on their website as Silver Sold Secure .. email sent). Once Sold Secure always Sold Secure? Maybe others will do likewise.
-
Spoke to evans cycle insurance and they said that although the evo mini is no longer on sold secure list on their site it is still counted on their approved locks list as it was/is rated silver secure.
So that's good news. That is good news. Perhaps, perhaps, other insurers will do the same?
I've emailed Evans in any case, asked them to amend the product description.
... I wonder if they'll agree to cover the Fahgettaboudit Mini (even if never rated)? I'll ask.
-
BTW maybe it would help if we start using the locks proper names, i.e. New York Lock 3000, instead of Fahgettaboudit Standard, which doesn't exist, etc etc...
Quite right. The current correct name is the "New York Lock® STD" (or "Standard").
Of course the Fahgettaboudit Mini isn't called the "Fahgettaboudit Mini" either, it's the "New York Fahgettaboudit® Lock", not a Mini in sight.
I'll make amends.

Just choose an insurance company that required a certain type of lock, says "u-lock above £35".
Any idea which companies do this? If you can recommend one, the insurance thread would love to hear.
-
How much is the Kryptonite fahg?
Cheapest prices I could find:
Kryptonite New York Fahgettaboudit® Lock (also known as the "Fagh Mini")
Parker International £55.25 (free delivery, tick box during checkout) - Support the little guy!
Kryptonite New York Lock® STD (Also known as the "3000", or "NY Standard")
Parker International £49.10 (free delivery)
(if no stock, worth trying amazon, they've had some very good prices on the Fahg recently - £44.90).
Again, do try to support Parker, the longer they're around the better.
-
netherless I'm still sticking to my Evo Mini and Fah Mini.
Something I obviously wouldn't suggest, at the bottom of this post in the insurance thread. A stupid fiction?
-
-
Oh, and the 2nd post about Kryptonite and insurance in the "locks that work" thread:
http://www.lfgss.com/post1274259-474.html
Hopefully the last. There's obvious crossover, but I'll try to keep the threads separate.
As I mention, if anyone has more concrete details on the Kryptonite guarantee terms & conditions, please do post them, or PM. Despite the number of hoops you have to jump, how do they compare to a regular bicycle insurance policy (eg. the Butterworth policy with LCC)? What's included, and what isn't?
[Edit]
Second thought: One could always buy a cheap Series 2 (or anything cheap that complied), leverage it yourself (eg. with a car jack), use the non-compliant Fagh Mini when out and about, and in the event of a theft, just send in your carefully stored compliant remnants.
Obviously, not that I'd suggest actually doing this ... just thought it was a nice fiction for a possible world.

Ok enough about locks & insurance. I'll leave that to the insurance thread.
GA2G, if I might ask, perhaps you can add a caveat to the front page? Something like "These are the best, but for better or worst, to comply with common UK insurance policies indicated locks should be combined with a Sold Secure approved lock". Or just note which are Sold Secure, without condoning the insurers' preferences. It would be pretty rubbish to be recommended an expensive lock, and only later realise that it invalidated your policy.
Perhaps the Kryptonite Series 2 will turn out to be a good lock. They are calling it "The next generation in standard bicycle security".
Sound promising? Anyone want standard security?

A small challenge, but while squinting at the Guvnor, a thought occurred. The seat stay is bolted on with regular nuts at the top and bottom. Wouldn't this make any U-lock passed through the rear triangle almost useless? A quick twist with a regular spanner and the wheel goes free.
The only way round I can see is to lock the rear wheel to the main frame, but if I'm doing that to the front wheel as well, then it seems I'd need a third U-lock to go round the proverbial immovable object. Pashley's relaxed frame doesn't allow you to pass a U-lock through a wheel, the main frame, and an object all at once, everything is too far apart.
One other potential complication, the Evo mini I'd normally use is too small to lock the front wheel to the frame. The Fahg mini fits perfectly, but seems overkill for the job. Plus, if you need to carry three locks, weight is a premium. Perhaps cutting the rubber off would help, but shiny things don't like bare metal. And I'm not going to use cables.
Maybe I'm missing something obvious. Any ideas?
Here's a picture I borrowed, to illustrate:
