Is speed/average speed reasonably accurate on a GPS device without a speed sensor? I know there'll probably be a lag, and the occasional weird bit where it shows a speed of 0mph or 200mph, but can they generally show usable average speed?

Am thinking of converting my Dolan FXE commuter into a fixed TT bike by slamming the stem, fitting TT bar and upping the gearing. This is for a 10 mile cycling part of a triathlon relay.

Worth doing or would I be better just riding my Canyon Ultimate AL maybe with clip on tri bars? I probably wouldn't be as low at the front end in this set up.

I have no real aero equipment apart from clip on tri bars.

Cheers, I tried this out and it was a pleasant change. Hammersmith RBT itself isn't too bad I find, it's the slow filtering along queues of traffic that kills any fun.

anyone know any decent (i.e. quiet, civilised) routes between Wandsworth Town and Shepherds Bush? Traffic through Fulham and Hammersmith at rush hour is tedious. Don't mind if it's not the quickest.

Left at a different time today. Hit peak douche. Probably worst offenders being cyclists (riders 'slipstreaming' behind me, twat on a boris bike sailing through red into a stream of other cyclists, idiot texting while exiting sloane square onto sloane street).

I tend to avoid going along the Embankment - it's the 'quickest' route to work but I'd rather take Battersea park and enjoy the peace and quiet of the car free road. There's too much aggro along there.

Extremely close call this morning. Car going in opposite direction turning right as I was going over junction. Lights were about to change but hadn't yet. Car obviously thought the car that was in front of me was the last vehicle and just stepped on it. Next thing I see the car is turning and accelerating towards me. I had to sprint out of the saddle and even then it missed my rear wheel by inches and at speed. I still don't think the driver ever knew I was there.

2nd time this kind of thing has happened to me in last few months. Do people not look properly? Also, commuting later in the morning after 9am there seems to be more of this kind of thing, as if people have thought rush hour is over so they no longer have to concentrate.

Any recommendations for some nice, leather, hard wearing shoes for narrow feet with arch support? My feet either need insoles with support or a shoe with a equivalent. Shoe shopping is minefield....

Why, if it's called 'exchanging places', is it just the cyclists who go into the cab of a HGV? Where are the drivers on bikes?

Also, still loads of whoppers blasting down the shared use path along the river at Wandsworth. Between them and the residents who've resorted to putting flower pots in the way to slow them down, I despair at our dysfunctional road culture.

Are the basic CO2 cartridges on ebay OK or need I go for a branded version?

Am considering a first mini tour from london to edinburgh and back (with a few days recovering in Edinburgh), using the LEL audax route. Staying in BnBs along the way. Looks like around 85 miles a day. Only have a road bike and want to go as light as poss so thought I'd try an apidura saddle bag plus maybe a frame bag or handlebar bag to distribute weight. What do people think?

It should be remembered that a city like Amsterdam is an 'inside out' city, i.e. much more of the big commercial buildings etc are built on the outskirts while the centre is to a much greater extent residential and historical buildings etc (because of the limitations on building on unstable foundations). That makes the centre far quieter in terms of traffic than other cities and contributes hugely to making it a possible to have the infrastructure they have.

I think I may have managed to round off either the headset grub screw or the 2mm allen key on my acros headset. Anyone know where I can get replacements? Tempted to just get a traditional headset as have never got on with acros.

Yes. Sadly, too many people go full gas, buzzing pedestrians and other cyclists (who do ride considerately). The flower pots across the entire path are ridiculous and I can't imagine the local authority did this or would allow it to stay like that.

Saw a black cab today with the message 'look out for cyclists' displayed in neon on his roof.

In Holland etc don't they start teaching kids at school from a young age how to cycle? It's an attitudinal thing that needs to become in built in society. People here seem to think you don't need to think about cycling or bikes and it's second nature whereas the opposite is true.
