1/3 fruit juice 2/3 water for a drink. I always eat a banana or flapjack on my normal 25 mile route (1500ft climbing and a couple of 10% hills is enough for a fairly unfit cyclist like me - does that sound about right or does it sound really easy?), glass of milk when I get home.
When I lived in York, the valley to the north was so flat that I'd ride 70 miles on water and chips from the pub. If I had a geared bike it would've been a better workout, but 66" forces you to relax.
Hello past me. I'm still fairly unfit, I'm still riding the 25 mile route plus an additional 15 miles tacked on the end, still on a banana, but now drinking very diluted squash plus a big pinch of sugar and little pinch of sea-salt. Cheaper, innit.

Do people in Holborn not realise that if I plough them down on my 29er at 20 mph they will feel pain?
Essentially the same thing that motorists say about cyclists that are 'in their way'. Drive/ride/walk to the conditions. In the same way that drivers should know that even the best cyclist has the occasional little wobble, cyclists should know that even the best pedestrians occasionally step into the road relying on their ears rather than their eyes.

re: hands, best I've managed is a drop of fairy liquid and some used ground coffee. magic.
This does work rather well (better than sugar, at least); Maldon sea salt (or any particularly 'scrunchy' salt) is exceptionally good.
The downside to all detergents is that, in more or less time depending upon their strength and frequency of use, they will remove the natural oils from your skin. If you're getting dirty hands every day, best to wear latex gloves to reduce the amount of cleaning required, and make sure to moisturise them afterwards (Vaseline/E45). In a former life as a mechanic (both car and bicycle), I knew several venerable dudes with dry, cracked and very painful hands from years of daily scrubbing.
As for chain cleaning, I will wipe/scrub the drivetrain with some baby wipes after every ride, but I don't lube it (baby wipes contain some oils that prevent rusting in the short-term, and I do it at least once a week anyway). Occasionally if it's really gritty (as on the MTB) I'll take it off and slosh it around in a bottle of washing up liquid/hot water (I used to use diesel, which works much better, but I now live in a flat and don't have anywhere to keep it) - after sloshing the majority of the hidden grit out, pulling it through a clean cloth a dozen times seems to remove almost all the remaining grit (this is because it rotates the links and the bushings). All my bikes are now geared, incidentally.
Does anyone use a chain cleaning machine?

Any fastener supplier/engineering supplier should sell these loose, just take in the old one and the bolt to make sure the threading is correct.
What you want is one of those old crusty warehouses with stacks of gubbins in dirty cardboard boxes, and an old guy who knows where everything is.
Failing that, put a wanted ad up on the forum: someone's probably got one, somewhere.

I had drilled a hole in my Nitto handle bar for a brake cable. I've cycled with it for over a year, but it gave up yesterday when I was climbing the slope from the basement where my bike was stalled. Fortunately, I did not fall.
I'd dissuade anyone from drilling holes in handle bars....
Not meaning to sound rude, but what were you expecting?

Oh hardly; I had a 1940s Claud Butler and found all period parts* within a couple of weeks on ebay/RB. Actually I also had a late 50s Dawes with all original parts, too.
- except rims, which would be the only difficult bit - but modern VO polished 700cs would be a reasonable match, and better tyre options than 27" anyway.
