Hi everyone, today I'm at National Hack The Government Day at the Guardian offices.
Basically it's a hack-a-thon where geek, developers, designers come together to mashup government data that they've made publicly available now, (for example http://www.data.gov.uk and http://data.london.gov.uk) and present it or do something useful with it.
Alot of people are mashing up things to do with the election, CCTV, digital economy bill, import tariffs etc.
I've decided with a couple of people to do something more to highlight the problem which is obviously of most concern in this forum — road incidents involving cyclists and the prevalance of HGV collisions. Something I really think needs to be addressed in a simple, accessible, visual, and useful way which I hope can invoke some change in public policy to make our roads safer for us.
I hope you'll be able to offer some good input and ideas about how best to present this.
I was thinking initially to take what pretty rubbish data the government holds with alot of the useful information I can find on this forum and on Google News aggregated news sites. (by the way we've got until 6pm today to finish this!)
First of all, can I ask you which information do you think is the most relevant and helpful to the safety cause for cyclists? Maybe it could be all cyclist incidents with other road users? or cyclists incidents overall? or something else? I think incidents involving other road users would be the best but am open to any input from all of you.
First of all I need to find out what is the most useful data to include in this. To get you started I came up with:
incident type (death? / serious injury? / etc)
cyclist name
cyclist age
cyclist gender
incident date
incident location
cyclist wearing helmet
time of day
peak-time or not?
was cyclist visible (if at night were they wearing any hi-vis or lights)
collision with what type of vehicle
court decision of fault
cyclist's years of experience
type of cyclist (ie. commuter / serious / messenger / something else)
court conviction (yes / no)
court sentence for driver (or cyclist, if any)
any citations / referencesHope you can help.
Cheers

yeah on leopard / snow leopard these are the best:
iPlayer Grabber (you just click the one you want - one at a time though)
http://fader.co.uk/post/iPlayer-Grabber-the-iPlayer-downloader-for-Mac-OS-X.aspxGet iPlayer Automator (indexes the entire archive where you can queue up what you want and leave them to download):
http://tom-tech.com/iplayer_automator/iPlayer_Automator/Get_iPlayer_Automator.htmlAt the moment you might find that some programs won't download, that's because they might be too new, or the BBC just haven't made/uploaded the iPod version of the program.
