A five star hotel is great for holidays. When you are essentially sleeping there, 1 or 5 star has little difference. Whilst in a location where you are resented and envied in equal measure it is difficult to enjoy the benefits of your 5 stars particularly when there is little to do and not much option to "take in the local sights or culture". During my time overseas I probably averaged a 70 hour week, which I really don't believe was appreciated or believed by the Uk based staff. All any one ever saw was "wow loads of money, international travel and 5 star hotels". This was part of the reason I gave it up, along with wishing to spend time with my family. I do not regret my time overseas, Although I am glad I gave it up, additionally Saudi and Nigeria were low points that made me decide that I would only travel, on my account, but you do need to work in some sh**holes to gain experience, please the company, and get the jobs in the carribean. Work is never all roses.

I worked in Saudi over 10 years ago,it was truly awful and soul destroying, despite various subsequent offers I refused to go back. The expats I met there where a sad group of people.
Dammits attitude is very reminiscent of the attitude of the back room/home staff I had to deal with at the time. Little idea of the realities, and absolutely no intention of trying to understand them. To Dammit I am sure you are a nice bloke, this is not a go at yourself, but the tone of your post struck an unpleasant note. I will quantify my post by saying that I worked for more than 10 years as an expat and regardless of location, the support received from our UK offices was lacking in it's understanding of the real hardships of it's staff on a daily basis. -
