found the link to show how to do it all
http://www.parktool.com/repair/readhowto.asp?id=40
how could i move this to the mechanics forum and progress chat there ?? -
i am going to get a couple of old axles and use the cones and nuts to make up something like what the park tool shown here does then you can see how much out of line the two drop outs are and then bend them till they line up
as you say very carefully .
i can touch the paint up afterward as i have some left from the respray i did on it
cheers

it aint f...ed
and it isnt the whole of the rear forks that are out
i think it is just the drop outs that need realigning. i have read sheldon browns item on cold setting but that is to widen the dropout gap
this is taking a 126mm wheel with old style freewheel, and i think it is just the angle of the dropouts relative to the plane of the bike frame that is wrongi shall have a go at making some drop out alignment tools of my own when the snow goes , too cold to work in my garage at the moment

hi folks
any suggestions as to how to sort the rear drop out alignment on my old 1965 falcon frame .when i change gear to a big rear cog the derailleur is pointing to the middle of the bottom bracket or even a little bit more to the non chain side of the frame and the chain is part riding over the bottom pulley
is this the right place to post this ?

i have just renovated my old 1965 falcon frame, i am over 60 now and my brother and i had 2 new bikes in 64 and 65 and this is what remains, lovely wrap over rear fork design see below was all 531, but now is except front forks which i had to replace and i am now looking for some 531 front forks for 27 inch wheels to get it back to all 531. note the cardboard wrap on rear fork due to slight drop out alignment problem which i am sorting and then it comes off and just needs handle bar tape
anyone got any 531 forks for 27 inch wheels they want to sell??
cheers

ell you learn something every day
rear wheel axles are what they called a rolled thread so the thread is not cut but rolled on top the axle bar, no metal is removed but it is just moved into a thread shape and hence the top of the thread is larger diameter than the bottom obviously, but also larger than the diameter of the unthreaded bar, it is a semi forged effect and makes it very strong. so i cant cut the axles with new thread to extend the old, so i have used some 10mm threaded bar and nuts and checked the alignment, only very slightly out, re checked derailleur and it seems the cage part is twisted so am going to take it to bits and see if i can get it into aflat all-in -one-plane condition by use of vice and hammers !!
