Sooooo
Been upgrading my Grinder and I'm looking for more classic looking parts than what's on the frame now, one upgrade I'd like to make is a quill stem.Only problem is that the Charge Plug has a 1 1/8" headset apparently.
Is a shim to make a 1" quill stem fit possible/advisable?
As with all of my questions on here, may be stupid so I apologize in advance!
Cheers.

Caved in and ordered my first piece of Rapha clothing, a waxed cotton cycling cap.

Is this the start of a slippery slope into spending too much money for fancy cycle clothing I wonder?

That actually is a midge bar on there, with levers on the flats. It's the weird angle making the drops look deeper than they are.
Perhaps it's just because i've never ridden any kind of drops before but the angle of my back/neck when in the drops doesn't seem all that comfortable to me, which is why I'm considering something a little more upright (think the way the bars are on a guvnor, swept back with a tiny drop)
Will give these a proper go before I decide though.I actually considered the 2 speed kickback hub, but looking at the weight/gear range compared to the 5 speed hubs I'm not really sure whether I'd really gain much from having it.
At the moment i'm running 71 Gear inches which is mostly fine but I'd love some lower options for when I'm lazy or can't be bothered to crank it up a hill full pelt.
I looked it up, and with the 2 speed I could get around 50 and 70 gear inches from it, or with a 5 speed I could be looking at around 86, 72, 54, 40, 34 Inches.Decisions!

Current build now updated.
Debating on what next, I want a Sturmey Archer 5 speed hub in there. Considering getting the coaster brake version and ditching the rear brake, but the coaster version adds a fair bit of weight to the already hefty hub.
Once I've got that in i'll probably swap the bars around for some of the moustache ones I've got spare for a more relaxed riding position. -

or more specifically just the band part as I want to fit one of these sturmey levers onto it:

Cheers.

Should be getting some lovely new bits for my Charge Grinder this week, ordered a Brooks B17 and Brooks bartape both in black.
Also ordered two bars, on one mungo and midge, not sure which I'll prefer so will have a play about on each of them for a bit before I decide and tape up.I'm ashamed to say that a nice 5 geared Sturmey hub should be winging it's way to me soon too....

Got the charge bowl drop bars today and had a little go on them, not too impressed really.
There is no space on the tops for a nice hand position (I'd like the option) as the flat is super narrow.Ordered a set of midge bars instead to see how I get on with those, they look like they have a similarly shallow drop but a much more generous flat section.

Just picked up Demon's Souls for the PS3
It really is as punishing as everyone says.
Enemies attacks are just as strong as your own and your health is fuck all.
It's all about the skill and reflexes rather than arbitrary stats (though stats play a part as in any rpg). When you die you go back to the start of the level (world) you were in and everything has respawned, and they knock your health down to 50% until you reclaim your soul from the place you died.
Hard but very fun, nice to have a real challenging game once in a while...

While single speed is very fun and all I am missing gears a bit, as my need for my bike have changed a bit (need to carry more shit with me). After playing around on the gf's Pashley Princess Sturmey 5 speeds, I think I'd love to get one of these fitted to my Plug Grinder.
I'm still a novice when it comes to anything technical with bikes so forgive me if any of the following questions are dumb!Firstly I used the Sheldon Brown gear calculator to work out what gear inches I could get, and came up with the combination of 42/22 (currently 42/16) would give me the following:
82.5, 68.7, 51.5, 38.7, 32.2
Does that sound like a decent spread?Currently I'm running 42/16, and if i go for 42/22 this would mean needing to lengthen the chain by a bit, right?
Also do I need to worry about the sprockets position in relation to the chainring, or will this be the same width on the Sturmey compared to my current hub?Sturmey list the Over Locknut Dimension as 113.7, I'm guessing that i will just need a few washers to bump that figure up to 120mm to fill the space on my frame...
Lastly I should be able to get it built up into a wheel just using my existing 700c rim right?
Again sorry if these questions seem really stupid, but I'm learning as I go!
Cheers.

Just ordered some new bits for my cream grinder as I landed a new job, so I thought I'd treat myself.
Charge bowl drop bars (never really tried drops before, these looks quite shallow).
Brooks B17 (some luxury for my arse).
Brooks leather bar tape. Both in black to match the Glenbrook saddlebag I recently bought.
Quite excited about getting the new stuff! -
Well the huge inner geek in me just got very excited about the new SOE game.
EverQuest Next!
- Next Generation
- EQ players to feel at home
- Original EverQuest flavor and charm for art direction
- Want our feedback on what we liked from EQ1 and EQ2 (and you shall get it)
- Developer agrees that individual character strengths can not overshadow the “You’re in our world now” sense that the world is more powerful than you and you need to rely on others.
- EQ Next is a “re-imagining” of EQ and not taking place before or after.
More engaging combat, more immersive, more cinematic, and story emphasis.
Classes representative of what they’re doing in look, effect, what they do, animations
Less classes. Closer to the original EverQuest. Smedley acknowledges issues with the classes. “What is a Dirge?”
Realized they got way ahead of themselves announcing EQ2 when they did. Better planning this time + continued support of EQ’s 1 and 2.
Better transitioning from other EQ’s to ‘Next’ for players. Not trying to migrate players to this new title.
EQNext more scalable with technology whereas EQ2 wasn’t. Want everything from lower-end
“People think that because we made Free Realms that this game is somehow going to be like Free Realms — going to be for kids. It’s not. This game is in no way being made for kids…” – John Smedley
Devs want there to be the same fond memories for ‘Next’ that people reminisce about over the old EQ.
After mentioning that a lot of people talked about corpse runs and other memories of EQ1, a dev mentioned that they want memories of ‘Next’ to be fond memories.

I tried a few MMORPG games after my 4 year stint in the original, but nothing seemed to come close for me. I'm very excited about this new one, but only if:
It will work on my macbook
or
It will also be on PS3Fingers crossed.

My girlfriend was in a similar situation about 6 months ago, hadn't really rode a bike since she was a kid (no driving license). She was a bit nervous and wobbly to begin with but after a cycle training session the improvement was amazing, she's going to book another more advanced one soon I think.
I'd say just get the cycle training booked asap, it really is the best thing for anyone starting out!
