The important thing is to start to pull up with the front foot above the horizontal plain and push down with the back foot below the horizontal plain. Whilst shifting your weight sleightly forward.
Imagine you are looking at the drive side of the bike and the crank arms are the hands of a clock. When your front foot is at around 2 o'clock and your back foot is at 8 o'clock this is when you will try and catch it.

Bothwell that's called wing mirror jousting. It should be saved for the correct time and place, but hey it happens to the best of us.
Some old geezer tried to run me over in a super market car park, then as he reversed to have a second pop I accelerated, swerved and kicked his mirror clean off. He gave chase and we played ring a ring a rosie round a bollard till i could make good my escape.
