wow this has taken me back!! I forgot I had this bike!! i wish i could find pictures of it - I had it when I was about 6....
sparkle blue raleigh with a little computer attached to the handlebars with a plethora of sound effects, including sirens, whistles, and a selection of amazingly bad synth sounds and melodies....not forgetting the rainbow coloured streamers coming out of the handlebars too. Flash.i can safely say i had the coolest bike on the block!

apologies if this has been done before - i did a search and didn't find anything.....
but if you were compiling a mix-tape of cycling tracks (about cycling, tracks that make you think about cycling, tracks you like to ride to, etc etc) what would they be?
yes it is saturday and I don't want to go outside yet so thought i'd sort my i-tunes out this afternoon...............

to be fair, I just realised that maybe fitting my antique weinmann levers to some deda pista drops may not really be a good idea. So, at some point in the following week I'll get myself a nice pair of road drops, some of them shimano brake levers, and some NEW cables! woohoo! and maybe even a cheap pair of spd-sl's... And then change my work schedule from saturday to shudder sunday :(
:)
hehehe alex i see your self-restraint thing is going very well ;-)
yes! change to sundays! what an awesome saturday habit - we can ride over to RP at stupid o clock in the rain together! -
woooosh. that's crazy!! thank god no-one got killed or seriously injured.
what a nutter. DEFINITELY file a report. That guy should not be allowed on the road!i don't know if this rule applies to all mentalist drivers, but my dad sadly happens to be one of the reckless drivers in the world, despite me and everyone else who knows him trying to get him to calm down a bit.....
he once hit a girl who ran out in front of him on a blind corner (would have hit her if he had been going slow, mind, but i know how he drives so believed it to be his fault despite his protesting)....thankfully she lived.......he paid her hospital bills. etc etc....
BUT....the point is....he still drives like a complete fucking maniac.........ten years later. (I have sent my dad this thread in an email!)
don't know how to get him to stop :(
wonder if this man will still drive like a nutter after this incident.

Hi
I am looking for a no-frills fixed wheel training bike for the long hard cold months ahead. Clearance for mudguards, road drops+brakes, and horizontal dropouts would be great, but anything will be considered!
I'm 5'5" (166 cm), so I guess frame sizes between 51 and 53 cm (seat tube C-T) would be good.
If anyone has an old road bike they want to get rid of, this will be considered, as my boyfriend has all the parts needed to convert it to fixed. Anything steel and lugged!
My budget is £200 ish.
Thanks for looking!

Yep I agree - in fact, cycling pretty much saved me from a blahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh ............and it is all thanks to my friend Jo buying me a bike because I was too scared to try out cycling in London.........and thought all cyclists were mad crazy people for riding in London.........and now I am one of them.
I'm pretty sure I would* never ever* have gone out and got a bike myself. One day she called me to say I should go to her friends house and pick up the Raleigh that I had admired from afar for so long. I had to cycle home from Brixton to Finsbury Park all by myself and once I was off I realised it was fine, terrified a number of motorists, and miraculously made it around elephant and castle roundabout in one piece.......it was great, and it has changed my life! Who would have known that cycling would become the be all and end all for me, and if it wasn't for Jo's 'gentle persuasion'......then I'd have missed out....without a doubt.
I think trying to introduce her to cycling is a great idea, but obviously if she is adamant its not for her then leave it.........
:D -

ugh don't get her a mountain bike to ride around london....
that will put her right off.
Invite her out on a day trip somewhere, cycling somewhere beautiful and quiet. She can borrow my road bike if it will fit her.....
If she can experience the joy of cycling minus the psychopaths we have to deal with on a daily basis, then perhaps it will entice her into trying out a gentle commute with you............
I would go for the slowly slowly catchy monkey approach
Nothing would piss me off more than my boyfriend trying to make me take up his hobby to make life easier for him ;-)as a girl i reckon get her a hybrid or mountain bike to start, and start by taking her on fun rides (ie offer to take her to things she likes by bike) on quiet roads to get her confidence, until she realises that it is the best way to travel! then she'll be hooked :) Then a cycle training course for sure.
I remember when I started commuting by bike i was really intimidated by domineering drivers, but determined to do it. it really helped going out with a friend who was really experienced a few times, i learnt so much and gained confidence. So just take it really slowly with her and be patient...

woo looking forward to a bike-off in 2010!
keep us posted on how this club goes - be good to get some communication going between the two - if only just to share ideas etc.
been trying to figure out how to encourage people at college who don't cycle and perhaps don't think they want to, to try it out / get on a bike. suggestions welcome.....
also just generally, i am quite surprised that most universities don't appear to have similar clubs in place, and that there is no nation-wide student cycling scheme in place in the UK (that i am aware of, anyway...correct me if i'm wrong :-) Seems an ideal group to be targeting to start riding.....seeing as we are all skint and have so much time on our hands ;-)
good luck with your club, let us know how you get on with it and feel free to bounce ideas back and forth / join forces in the future to do something....... :)

heard about this but reports said it was a pedestrian....
Traffic officers are appealing for witnesses to a fatal collision in Camberwell on Monday 12 October.
Police were called at approx. 08:50hrs to reports of a collision between a skip lorry and a female pedestrian in Camberwell Road, Camberwell
Local officers attended and London Ambulance Service took the woman to hospital Kings College Hospital.
She later died just before 14:00hrs.
Next of kin have been informed.
She was Risikat Ajoke Balogun, 23 (14/2/86) from SE5.
The driver of the lorry, a man aged 30, stopped at the scene.
He was arrested in connection with the collision and taken to a south London police station.
He was later bailed to return on a date in early December pending further enquiries.
Officers from the Collision Investigation Unit (CIU) at Catford Traffic Garage are leading enquiries.
Any witnesses or anyone with any information are asked to call the CIU's dedicated witness line on 020 8285 1574.
Alternatively call Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111. -

if you ever want a bike-off.....

drop us a message if you are interested. There is a cycle club just started at LCC, namely the LCCCC.
Its mainly teachers, me and Strip My Mind joined and would like more fg or ss riders getting involved...

It's a car park. With 6 or 7 levels. If BMX'ers rock up to an empty car park (whether they started the polo thing or not) and decide to start doing tricks on the one floor that a couple of people are trying to play polo on, I don't see why anyone should be considered an asshole for asking them to go do it on one of the other levels.
I have been to a few of these nights - it is definitely not a secret, and it is a great way to get people started. I can see why Charco chose not to shout about it - to give us folk who haven't a clue to get up to scratch before polo players come down for a few games and are so good that there is no point in even trying to play because the level is too high for people who have literally played once or twice.
Brendan, I'm sure we will all happily give you a game once I learn how to hit the ball. (oh and I'm using your first name cos i have met you....asm's gf here...)
In the meantime, I can assure you, you *don't *want to play polo with me.
