i have it on 'good authority' that Cliff Shrubb/Pearson made a number of custom steel race/tourer frames like this in 531st, his style of concave seatstay cap plus the cable guides he used are on this frame. The columbus and Allez dropouts could have been requested as custom and the heart detail lugs aparently featured a lot on his early 80's bikes and Pearsons who he built for

yep, stripped, painted, stripped and now painted again, it was worth it to find the '1' You can imgaine what it was like to see the outline of a number then the full outline, then... nothing... bitter sweet aint it.

haha, great idea. ...i did hear on good authority there was a guy on Bridge Street, Macklesfield making audex frames in a tiny workshop using reynolds rear and allez front dropouts in the ealry 70's, his name was Roy Wood, still to this day he says his first was his best....

no markings on the inside of the headtube sadly. it might just be nine little tubes to some but to others its a passion and a lifetimes work so im not giving up on its identity !

i decided to spray and build the bike up (the stripped photos were taken a week ago!)

and then i got curious about what the BB was, its a british thread, and then what was under the plastic cable router so i decided to strip the paint and investigate and i found this....

nice, yeah its unlike a builder not to mark the frame somewhere, maybe i need to remove the gear router and take the paint off the bb to be sure !

actually yes, it does look a lot like the KOM with the seat stay and lugs and eyelets. Would Mercian still number if it was a custom build?

seatpost in it is 27.2 but its pretty stiff, maybe it should be a 27mm

true, when were the top cable guides first used as its seems it would be an early version given the lack of brazeons

thats what i suspected about the Specialized as they were mostly road/race bikes with no mudguard add ons.

Yes, that is unusual, it came with Suntour accushift banded on and all it has is a circular nodule welded on to the underneath of the downtube presumably to allign the shifters but quite a specific addition

I recently picked up this frame and forks with no badge or decals except a 531 ST on the seatpost tube which was on wonky! And also 531 decals on the forks, put on after after an respray.

It has no markings on the BB shell or inside the head tube it has 'Reynolds' stamped on the rear dropouts and 'ALLEZ' on the fork dropouts, there was talk about a link to an early Specialised Allez but i think someone in authority could verify this. It came with a nice looking chrome tange headset and bottom bracket but not sure if that means anything. It's pretty lightweight, only 2.8kg for a 57cm ctt f&f.

The gear cable routing is plastic riveted on and says made in France but could have been added later as it looks fairly new, that's all I got! Anybody recognise it as a particular brand as I'd love to give it its badge back!

Im looking for a few bits to finish off a nice Scapin i just picked up and before i spend a fortune on ebay i thought someone might have some parts they want to offload, I need a campagnolo italian thread bottom braket and front mech braze on and a crankset, I would love c record but my budget might not get there!
Also im in Devon so ill pay postage costs too.
