I think you might be right for what it is in terms of materials etc, but for me it was the only bike that met all my requirements in terms of geo, availability, wheel and tyre compatibility, chainring clearance etc. And it rides like a 700 quid frameset, not like a 200 quid kids bmx, so if ride quality was a concern more than price then I was trying to say keep it on the shortlist.

I ride a fair bit of bmx myself (or have done) and it doesn't feel like it's made from the same material. Might be because the tubes are longer, but there's a compliance you wouldn't expect and it doesn't feel as dead or as heavy as you'd think either. But I'd wager its still pretty resilient to a hard life vs fancier steel options. Yeah it's a 50cm. And whilst I like the ride of the fork, I have considered switching to a whisky to save some weight when budgets allow.

This is exactly my point, you just explain it better.
I didn't call all leave voters gullible, I said the leave campaign targeted the gullible (few) with propoganda as they realised this was enough to tip the balance in their favour.
My own dad and mum being a prime example. They swallowed the £350m per week and "make this country great again" without any substance to back it up other than the theme that it'll be the easiest negotiation in history to get all the things we want from brexit.
Neither of my parents are stupid. Far from it. I suspect my dad would vote leave again out of pure bloody mindedness but my mum feels duped now she's more informed. And would vote to remain.

If you're hiring a bike then they'll normally include a full face helmet, knee pads and body armour (with built in elbow pads) in the price of the hire.
Are you planning on riding the trails there ie using the uplifts, or more xc type stuff? A good single crown enduro bike (160-180mm travel) will tackle all that us mortals can throw at it there and be loads of fun. I used my DH bike but TBH had more fun when I pinched my son's 160mm enduro bike for a few runs as it was just more playful but still perfectly capable on all the gaps, drops and jumps etc I tackled.
I found the enduro bike popped higher, jumped further and allowed more "whip" (for want of a better word) than the DH. But the DH bike does look cool 8-)
The Megatower would be ideal, but I think there are a lot of Bronsons for hire there (which would also be ideal).
I'd try to pre arrange a hire before you get there though as they tend to sell out of the better hire bikes quite quickly. And you're right, everything you'll need bike wise is avaliable to buy there, but expect to pay full price.
You'll have a blast.

Oh and there was a Harley Davidson gathering in town too. 20,000 hogs apparently. Made for good mullet spotting opportunities. And plenty of market stalls if flick knives, knuckle dusters, skulls etc are your thing. There was also a wall of death demonstration and a festival like stage pumping out dubious euro metal.
We had a great time. Not sure my hat helped me fit in with the leather waist coat vibe.

That was a starter. But it was for a chalet of 14 hungry MTBers.
Yeah there's xc and singletrack aplenty. There are all sorts of way marked xc/enduro routes, which seemed to be largely frequented by ebikes :)
We got a lift from Linderets up into Switzerland so that we could try out the Swiss National DH track. We did a few of the trails in that area but then found that there were no obvious [all DH] routes back to Linderets. So we ended up on a beautiful trail which was mainly natural singletrack. Plenty of down, but more uphill than was optimal on my DH bike. Regardless it was one of my fave parts of the week.

The name?
Surly have always been innovators, trying to offer something that the giant brands don't eg they've been doing clearance for fatter tyres for years before it's become the norm. OK they're not pushing the boundaries of technology but it's unfair to say that they're not trying different things and offering something a bit niche. And as has been said, you pay for smaller production batches. The whole market has sorta invaded their space with gravel bikes and ever wider tyres becoming the norm now but for me the midnight special was still the only frameset I could buy (without waiting an eternity for custom) that ticked all my specific wants. So for me it offered good value in terms of my immediate need for a bike (having been dicked about royally by another manufacturer) and also price.
But if its not for everyone, that's fine too. You pays your money, you takes your choice.
I love riding mine.
