Im sure the top people will always get a race, I've got no idea at what point they start the ballot but I think all those that enter should treat it as a race. From the facebook group it seems as though a significant number see it as an excuse to cycle across Europe, and I think some don't ever plan or expect to finish. I know if I'd entered and not got a place I'd feel hard done by.

Cycled CW, route wasn't signposted then and the bits I did last week still weren't signposted. Some parts are called wester ross costal trail, Scotland is quite empty so a map is easy to follow. East coast wasn't very exciting, and the A9 is quite a busy road. I didn't have any problems with midges recently but I know some people have had real trouble, if its raining or windy you're fine! Smidge is a repellant and they wont go near you and avon skin so soft forms a oily layer which they stick to and wont bite through, but does mean you're covered in them. Avon can "freeze" if it gets a bit cold which was surprising.

Stay clear of the cheep hire car places at the airport, they tend to rip you off for mystery scratches. Stick to Avis, Hertz etc. I probably wouldn't bother with a hire car when you are in Cape Town, use uber. For short journeys it's one or two pounds, was there a month ago working in a township 35km away and it was under £10 to get out there.
I'd recommend lions head in the morning too. Would recommend hiking table mtn (via kirstenbosch gardens or india vester), Devils peak (if you like the first two), Also silver mine/constantia nek is good
Surfing at muzenburg, Fish and chips and the bakery in Kalk bay round that way are good too.
Bikes we rented from here http://www.capetowncyclehire.co.za/
We did the Chapmans peak drive, boulders beach (penguins) and cape point on rented vespas. Wind and rain got up and it was pretty risky but if its sunny and not windy would be good.
Everywhere seemed to sell burgers and the best of them were, Hudsons, Royal Eatery and The dogs bollocks (which does good breakfast, lunch and coffee and is a bit different)
Addis in Cape Town was a decent Ethiopian restaurant
Takumi was good (to a western palette) sushi, reasonably priced too.
Truth coffee was best coffee
Nandos!Loads of bars on Long Street (Which is pretty tacky but a laugh), Bree street and Loop street as well (First Thursday of every month all the galleries open late and the bars around here are very busy)
Woodstock is nice, biscuit mill is worth a visit for a borough market feel at about 1/3 of the price.
I would agree with the avoid things. People ask for money a lot. I also felt like the train station was a bit dangerous. Don't walk alone, if in doubt get an uber!
If you have a spare 5 days I would recommend driving up to the Orange River for a canoeing trip. Which was amazing, sleeping under the stars, canoeing through a mars like landscape. Recommend Amanzi River Trails if you fancy that.
Cederberg is also amazing if you want to get out in the wild. We stayed in Krakadouw cottages near Clan William which were rustic but beautiful.
I think thats it....

Thanks and signed up! Always been frustrated with having the annoyance of emailing myself photos to upload from my phone so this sounds like a good solution.

I was doing it at the same time as the transcontinental and in Italy, Slovenia and Croatia it was above 40 and only just dipped below 30 at night which meant that sleeping was tough.
The rest of the countries were more manageable but that might have been because we got used to it and got better at managing it.
We sort of followed a route similar to this apart from we went to Prishtina, and Podgoricia from Kotor over Lovcen.
Serbia was missable, Kosovo was great. We ate out all the time, cevapi sound great but quickly become dull. The costal road in Croatia was too busy to bother cycling on so we spent all our time slightly inland which meant hills. Water was easy, the border from Montenegro to Kosovo the road has been washed away and police try to turn you back however if you ask nicely they'll let you through.
If you have any questions I'm happy to try and help

I have just had to up my luggage allowance to 40kgs + 27kg bike as I couldn't fit it in 20kgs plus hand luggage. Went to buy the food yesterday, then last night tried to pack it all in using front roller panniers with no luck so have my light things in rear roller ortliebs on the front.
I'm starting to think I have gone a bit mad planning a trip like this, but I'm really using it as a test for the possibilities of bigger things in the future.
