I find that the first couple of days 60 miles feels like a long way, then all of a sudden 100+ is fine and easily manageable. Just getting used to it makes a big difference for me.
I haven't been to SF but judging by my instagram feed you'll find it easy to find some boxes!

I have a dawes super galaxy from 2005 ish which has done me very well as a tourer over the last few years. Would want around £400 for it.
Or a Condor fratello which I'd want a bit more £700.

What options do I have for fixed/single speed wheels for a Surly cross check? Would like to put a 37mm+ tyres on. Hopefully around £100 to £150.

What makes you say that about the lht?

A) I think you'd probably be fine as long as you don't drill too deep into the axle.
B) m5
C) from the photo I saw online it looks like you can just remove the axle from the wheel.
D) don't bother doing it yourself, you'd want to set it up on a lathe to get the hole central and thread it properly.If you're happy to wait for a couple of weeks I'd do it for you. I just don't have the equipment at the moment.

I'd be happy with snow, it's the possibility off 9 days of 1 degree rain which puts me off.
