I was out in the area on Sunday morning on a ride - we got caught out by black ice on the road going West through Northaw. The shadow from the hedgerows was enough to keep the standing water on the road frozen. The opposite side of the road (in sunlight) was completely dry! Three of us went down and we ended to walking a few hundred metres until it was clear. The road was barely grippy enough to walk on - grass verge was ok.
Cars were of course completely oblivious and continued driving at the speed limit.
On the way back into London I came across the closed road and spoke to the PC who told me about this sad accident. He said it was at a known blackspot and that the black ice had been a factor. I think the accident was on the A1000 - South of the M25 overpass - up towards the pub - fast, dark, narrow and in the shade. Further South the view around the bend is obscured. Bright sunlight from the South could have reduced the rider's visibilty too.
Very sobering. RIP.
