As a rough guide, how often should chains be replaced on geared bikes? And how many chains do you go through before replacing a cassette, again, rough guide? I have a chain-checker but wanted to know if it's worth replacing every XXXkm or so.

For that price range I'm considering Campagnolo Zonda (Shimano option), £247 on Wiggle, or the deeper Shimano RS81 C35 (basically Ultegra level), £379 on Wiggle. Zonda for you and C35 for your dad maybe?

Are any models more reliable (less prone to crashes etc), than others? 500 seems a good price on Wiggle at the mo. Phone battery can't handle Strava for longer than about 3-4 hours now, so need something.

First proper group ride ever today. Joined a local club for a hill climb comp. Did not crash riding in a group. Still freaked out by not being able to see potholes when riding behind other people. Good fun apart from that.

If you won't be carrying lots of stuff and want something fast, the Cannondale SuperSix Evo 105 (2015, 5800), is £999 on sale at a few places. Westbrook Cycles for instance. I ride a 58 and am 6ft3. A 56 would suit you better.

If you want to attach pannier bags and a rack then there lots of other options.

Second-hand CAAD10 bikes on eBay are all great value. Or maybe a Croix de Fer if you want to carry more.

Really? My 58cm SuperSix Evo, "race fit", is 399mm reach.

Are these Scott Addict CX frames pretty decent? I like the cantis and threaded BB for easy maintenance. Was looking at Ridley X-bow complete bikes too which are on sale at the mo. That's alu and this is carbon.
