there is a thing called instinct and judgement, it normally comes with years of experience.
Indeed so when someone lies about themselves - by saying they are a solicitor on their way to court for example, its the sort of thing which will give them reasonable suspicion to investigate further.
I've still seen nothing other than conspiracy theories as to why you wouldn't want to give your details if asked.

Did you really just compare import duty avoidance to benefit fraud? Jeez...
No that's import duty evasion not avoidance. Avoidance would be for example bringing the goods in through another EU country which had lower customs duties (though I don't know if there is one).
So yes, sorry, customs duty evasion = fraud.

When the police stop you they do it because they have 'reasonable' suspicion. Whether they take it further from there or let you go will depend on how and what you answer. While you aren't obliged to give name and address, failing to do so is much more likely to push you into the follow up category than the let you go category. Which could then lead to a search and further action if you actually happen to be carrying something suspicious.
So, while I don't have to give my name and address, it's easier to. Of course the criminals do as well, but they tend not to give real ones which may get them off, or it may not.

To be fair if it got lost you wouldn't know the value marked on the goods. However the latest stunt that HMRC pulled on me was to hold the goods, even though they were marked as low value educational item (which they were) and insist on a copy of the invoice from the seller. I don't think they would have been impressed to find out that someone had been trying to defraud them. Tax avoidance is legal, tax evasion is not. My experience is that the larger the box, the more likely it is to get stopped.

Turned around in 5 days, lug lining, headset installation, new decals, top bloke. £90

more photos in current projectsI'm only slightly pissed off because it makes my other bike look dull.
Thats really nice lug lining. It's also the same lug set that Carlton used - the Capella

Declaring as a gift for the purpose of avoiding duty and tax is needless to say an offence and one the HMRC are well aware of. Reputable sellers won't do it, but the choice is of course yours. I mean its the government, right? Like benefit fraud, its OK to rip the government off because its our money anyway.

OK, here is my fixie beater. I'd be tempted to do something about the paintwork and rust but you can see by the saddle height that the frame is way too big for me. So I'm going to change the frame soon. But its done me well enough over the years and its not a bad frame at that, even if it does still have the crappy rear wheel on that it had when I got it. Gear ratio is well twiddly, something that I'll change once I've got used to cycling again.

And since photos of me are few and far between... I'm going to go with this one.

If the guy is really your friend you'd give him more than what he has asked. He is your friend so he has to be the generous one? wtf? If this is the sort of friend you are I'm not surprised that he's leaving the country, its the only way to get your scrounging arse out of his pockets.
He's moving country, he needs all the money he can because he's going to have a lot of expenses one way or another. Sounds like you are tight one, not him. If he is really that much of a friend... but no, he isn't is he? He's just someone you've used and now you want to use him one last time.

In the same circumstances where someone changes lanes. Technically the one hitting from behind is at fault, yes we all know that. But I've seen cyclists pull out into busy roads without slowing, assuming (hoping) that drivers will notice and take avoiding action and give them room. As I say, I almost did it the other night. Its very, very tempting not to stop, not to have to put the effort in to get back up to speed, to try and save that tiny bit of effort and time, to keep up the momentum.
I'm aware of your campaigning viewpoint, which I respect and understand. I also understand the need for you to hammer the point home regardless of reasonableness. This is also not the right thread to have this discussion, so for me, this is closed.

Abrasives will remove the satin finish, and while you could recreate it, it'd be a bugger. If you go the abrasive route you'll have to polish the whole hub.
