I thought there were specific laws about lights, the rules about reflectors only aply to bikes as sold. So if you buy a bike and take the reflectors off you aren't breaking the law?
Well that's what I thought originally but the highway code says:
It MUST also be fitted with a red rear reflector (and amber pedal reflectors, if manufactured after 1/10/85).
I've found some clarification from the CTC and in the actual legislation (http://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/1989/1796/contents/made)
Pedal Reflectors
Four are required, coloured amber and marked BS6102/2 (or equivalent), positioned so that one is plainly visible to the front and another to the rear of each pedal.But is any of this enforced? I don't know many cyclists who ride with reflectors so are we all throwing away our defence in the case of an accident after dark? Or is it generally ignored?

there are quite precise rules about lights/reflectors on bikes after dark. (front and rear white/red light, rear red reflector and amber pedal reflectors are all required by law).
are there any cases where knocked of cyclists have been found at fault or drivers been let off because pedal reflectors were not fitted?

i've got some battered ones, they need a bit of attention but would be fine for shopping. not good enough for touring on really.
I'm happy to freecycle them because one of the bags needs a repair to the drawstring on the top and a bolt to reattach the plastic clip which holds the bottom of the bag to the rack.

Driving in from Nottingham, haven't really looked at a route yet. We're staying near the Radisson. Staying for three nights too so don't mind ditching the car somewhere since we won't be using it.
We had heard about a park and ride that might be useful?

Not sure about a park and ride, it's 4 years since i lived in Edinburgh and I've never owned a car. If you park just south of the meadows then its a pleasant walk into town and quite flat incase your'e carrying bags. There might be places closer in too but i'm not sure about parking restrictions.

good luck 'dan sounds like a mission, i reckon putney bridge will be heaving.. best to watch from richmond park outwards if you want to catch the race at more than one spot.. and plan a ride which avoids the course... security on the route will be tight #shoottokill
Fair point, it might be harder to do this than at the ToB. just as well there are plenty of miles of road to find a spot but I'm still open to being scuppered by security.
Watching road cycling at the roadside is a bit shit though isn't it?
That's why I'm doing a ride, rather than paying to sit on Box hill. Ideally I'll get 40-50 miles in and get to see the race fly by with a couple of picknick stops on less popular bits of the course.

reckon it'll be more fun to ride round various points on the course and see the riders that way than standing in an allocated area on box hill.
i'm thinking of watching them cross the thames or richmond park then cycle out to the box hill loop and see them on the decent which i hope we will be able to access for free.

yup, i know all about that. what I was asking is are there any cases where lack of reflectors had been used against the cyclist.
Tiswas seems to think it's a possibility that a judge might apportion some degree of blame on the reflectorless rider.
