Been trying to find out more info on this early 80's Raleigh. Checking the serial number against Sheldon Brown's article on early Raleighs says that it was made in the first half of '83 in the Worksop factory which indicates that it's either 531 or 753. Resprayed in the code correct Ferrari red you see before you in the mid nineties, going to try and somehow strip down this layer as carefully as possible at some point in the next couple of days to see if that yields any unusual or distinctive OG paint underneath(I don't think the frame was stripped or blasted before painting). Not expecting anyone to know much about it really unless there's serious classic Raleigh buffs about but thought I'd chance my arm. I didn't know the frame was anything decent before remorselessly lopping off all the brazes so spare me please. Any help appreciated.

I built a frame from a Spirit for Lugs tube-set, and to be honest, the tubes themselves aren't that pricey. I think the reason frames made from it tend to be the more expensive ones is that it is easily available in small quantities (unlike Reynolds, AFAIK), which is better from low volume, high labour frame makers; the premium price is more for the hours of loving craftmanship, rather than the materials.
My frame is only a year old, but never treated with kid gloves, suffers a communal bike shed at work and I've not noticed any dinks or dents yet.
Looks like a lovely frame, so if it fits and the price is right, I'd go for it.(edit: Gara is un-butted, heavy tubing, avoid if you can. If you want to check out the different tubing specs/weight have a look at the Ceeway site here)
Gara is the name of their entry level alu frame(confusingly), it's not made from Columbus Gara.

Zaffiros are junk. Randonneur is good on the back.
Yeah, I'm a firm advocate of buy cheap, buy twice etc. but this time round being a student and consequently being in the omnipresent poor house prevailed. May just shell out another few bob for a Lugano or Blizzard Sport, had really good experiences with Schwalbe's puncture protection. Taking it to the Isle of Man for the TT at the end of the month and could do with the reliability.

Definitely one of the sweetest things to come out of a Saracen factory.
