Hi Oliver,
Just browsing Gum tree and I keep finding bikes that are almost certainly linked to those little scrouts that stole my friends bike. Different mobiles but very dodgy wrong adds, all using similar style email addresses and point on the map for location.
The police where shown 4 or so adds from the same guys when my friend reported his bike found, but as I said before they response was that from the add they cant prove its stolen. I think some action should be taken to stamp this out. I reconise the kid who tried to sell the bike and have seen him since. I believe he is possibly a front for maybe an older borther though.
I just thought it would be more info for the LCC and maybe you have some suggestions on how we can stop thses scrotes.

those plastic ones are known to get brittle and break. i also don't particularly like the way they look.
but yes, the sound of clips scraping on pavement is one of the worst sounds on earth. learn to clip in sooner, or get shorter crank arms! heh heh.
I found that metal ones tend to break easier, I accidently stepped on one and it snapped and friends have broken theres pretty easy. I do agree though they do look better than the plastic ones.

Just a quick question does any one know the difference between the Abus granit steel-o-flex 1000 and the 1050, other than the locking system. I.e is the cable section the same?
The reason is that I thought the major method of breaking a steel-o-flex was cutting so really there is no benifit of the 1050. I was just wondering because i use a 1000 as my secondary locking source.

Thanks very much for pursuing this, Neil. Would you mind very much if I edited all your posts together into a case study on theft? It is a fairly complex and very typical case. In fact, I think I'll put a thread up asking for such case studies. We (LCC) are just starting our big campaign against bike theft.
Hey Oliver, feel free to copy and paste my posts. I have come to realise this is a fairly typical occurance and that is why I took the route of reclaiming the bike.
If anyone does take the same approach on hydsight it could be worth making an excuss of having to go and collected cash so you can phone the police.
Also always go with a friend (hopefully someone large) they can act as like they are advising you on the bike. They can also make an excuse to leave if the seller wants to go the cash machine with you and when around the corner phone the Police.
Another tip from friends experiences with the Police is they come A LOT faster if you tell them there maybe vialance towards the theif if he doesnt hand over the bike. I know its not right and some people may have issues with that but for this tacktic to work you want to garruntee they turn up.
Another good place to look for bikes is www.bikeshd.co.uk quoted a while ago by a forum member

Just a quick update from the Police regarding my friends bike and the others that we found being sold by the same guys is that they cant prove they are stolen from the add so are not going to persue it and they are too busy!
So in my opion the only thing the Police are good for regarding bike theft is to give you a crime number to claim on insurance.
