I opened up my 15mm spanner trying to get a particularly recalcitrant pedal off; I was using a 2 foot scaffold pole as a breaker bar, so I wasn't especially surprised. Does a spanner that can take that kind of abuse exist? If I spend £20 on a snap-on one will it last forever?

Just back from the hospital - No broken bones, though it looks like Indra may have torn the ligament that connects his clavicle to his shoulder blade. He's on his way home with his mum now and will get some closer inspection in a couple of days with a specialist.
Painful stuff, but I'm so glad it wasn't something more serious :-/

Oops, slipped a decimal. That's a slightly more imaginable load. Mooring oil rigs is a good point, that hadn't occurred to me; I was thinking it might just be a legacy thing, to work with hardware at ports that was designed for 5" polypropylene etc.

I was just looking at the spec sheet for some dyneema line (for a speargun wishbone, incidentally) and I saw the table goes up to 5" diameter, with a 1200000 kg breaking strain. Surely they don't actually make that?

C-record chorus hubs laced to open 4cd's with fairly light wear to breaking surfaces? They're pre-freehub, just, which is annoying as they fall between modern-ish and vintage. Still a nice wheelset though. No idea at all as to value.
