Not sure where to ask this but:
Recently purchased a Shimano RS500 30mm bladed spoke wheelset. Everything seems fine, nice and true and they spin very freely. However looking closely at the front hub and the DS flange while the wheel is spinning reveals a vertical movement in the hub shell/flange, like it's out of round or there's a bent axle or something. Thing is it's perfectly true at the rim, maybe .5mm vertical movement at the rim, if that. So what could be going on? Warped hub shell? There's no play in the bearings either. I am not overly worried as the wheelset was £80 but I have never seen a hub look out of round. Shimano QC slipping? -

Having a quick browse - Zipp 60's would work. Can not afford...
@Thuekr - ah I see. Cheers! mmm, free lunch.

What was the movie that involved a crash landed human space fighter pilot and a crash landed alien space fighter pilot. They were both marooned together on an inhospitable alien planet and the alien turned out to be pregnant. The human helped the deliver the aliens baby. Was early 90's I think and possibly James Spader.
Pretty sure there were no androids in it...

Egg in the hat? That's a new one for me, whats it mean? Sounds like a bad thing...
@ Machine I have some older 90's 105 cranks coming. they'll be used to get me going until I figure out whether I'll do a full on period correct build or go modern. i.e. SRAM drivetrain and toroidal crabon or alloy rims etc.
-
Incremental update - new bargain wheels! Damn, they are noticeably heavy - nearly 3kg for wheels, tyres and cassette. But I'm not complaining considering the price.
I have a crankset coming and a chain so I should be able to do a test ride before the weekend. Excited.

Already planning V2 - Bar extensions, some proper aero wheels and drivetrain upgrades. That'll have to wait though.

for comparison. I'm not saying one way is right or wrong but it's just how I was taught.
When you pull the curve hard to the edge you essentially tell PS to take the colour that was at say, 3% and force it to 15% without a smooth transition.

Anyway, getting in the way of good pictures - there was nothing really wrong with the original!

Care to explain further? Sounds interesting...
I did a lot of retouching and prep work for print but most self taught so prob missing a few "pro" tips/theories... but then again everything printed fine so...Well, this is coming from the dude that taught me, and it was in PS v2 or something. So AAAAGES ago. And possibly more pertinent to greyscale printing for newspaper and similar (showing my age). For perspective, this was to prepare images for a varitype 2000 bromide machine...
Basically, an ideal curve would roll off to max/min rather than an abrupt sharp end. In theory this reduces banding and creates smooth grads. I'll do some quick screen grabs to explain.
But yeah, modern digital reproduction is extremely forgiving.

Actually yeah, for the time being.
Here's a crappy phone pic.

Mostly happy. It rides well, quite stiff so it accelerates well. The wheels are great (Archetypes + surly rear hub and ultegra front hub) although a very weird combination. I probably should have built onto DA hubs. I gave up being fussy and just built it so it rides how I wanted it too.

Thanks RVL, it is a weird thing. I've not ridden the thing yet but I'm already attached, more so than the Graham Weigh I have just finished. The Ron just feels good. Skinny tubes, half lugged, half fillet brazed it really is the bike I was looking for. I had this thought stuck in my head that before I return to Aus I'll build up a British frame to take back. This will be it. I now just have to pin down the year it was built so I can properly go hunting the right parts.
Also, nice shorter! What happened to it? Why Ill fated? or have you erased it from memory...

You should, as long as they are PD-7410s

In unrelated news, I haz PD-7410s for sellz
srsly? I could use those. I don't need them but single sided will look much better than my old beaten up M520 pedals. Are they in good working order?

PUSH cycles in Newington Green had some of these in stock a couple of weeks ago, not sure if theyre still there but worth a shot. You could de logo them easily.
