Hmm, very possible that has been imported from a snowy part of Japan so look closely for any bubbles under the paint, look under car if bolts and suspension looks rusted out.
Other basics of oil condition, coolant etc. Does the car blow any smoke when backing off the throttle.
That looks like a fairly unmolested example so that's a good thing.
Look for any signs of over spray around door jambs, in wheel arches. And check tyres are good and not 10 years old.

What about a pug 308 GTi 270?
Fast, bigger boot than a golf and comes with plenty of its own issues. 🙃 But I'm sure they are cheaper over there due to the usual french depreciation. Mines been great, although I did need a new clutch and front struts soon after I bought it. Previous owner must have liked slipping the clutch. They need new spark plugs every 15-20000 miles and the brakes can be spendy if they haven't had new discs yet. Front rotor is 380mm and genuine items are very expensive. luckily there's alternatives now. Here's mine, I've put 18" wheels on to improve pothole survival and cheaper tyres. The standard is 19. -

They're great. Although mine is not the upgraded king version. Just a Pepsi padi model. Not sure why the needed to upgrade, they're already robust and accurate enough. They are heavy, especially on a bracelet and they sit quite high on the wrist. But still perfectly manageable. I surf in mine and it doesn't feel unbalanced at all.

Ah, two little ones... Gotcha. Although, kids do grow fast, my 3 year old is almost the height of his 8 year old sister. It's nuts! It's why I have to stick with 5 door hatchbacks.
My son would love me to get a Mini, he's obsessed, he pats the taillights whenever he sees one parked. He does like my pug 308 GTI though, cause I can make the dash lights go red and the car gets noisy.

Would you consider a boxter? According to some Aussie dude on the internet they are basically the same car.

@NurseHolliday that is rad.
Somehow it loses all its dirtbag Aussie bogan character and becomes a charming larrikin over there.
I reckon get the AUS style rear light clusters on there and a set of these:

Thing is, you can buy locally delivered Foresters that are very similar and plentiful.
There's plenty out there. Although, @RonAsheton is that a 2 litre (ej20) and auto? I think the local Aussie versions were the GT and manual only. the next series up went to XT badging and have the 2.5t engine and you can get Automatics.
As for the rust, it's not terrible but if that has been on salted winter roads then there may be more hidden away. Also, timing belt, if the change was more than 5 years ago it's due for a new one regardless of kays.
