Yes, it would - I only cut mine to slam it.
I guess if you still need it to be quite tall but can't insert it further than in the picture, then it's not the butting anyway. Probably either dirt in the steerer, or maybe the end of the stem has been flared by the bolt being tightened too much when it's not in use (kind of like a headset removal tool, if you see what I mean). In which case you might be able to squeeze it back with a cable tie or something?
But if you do want to slam it and the butting is in the way, butchering it works a treat : )

You have a good tip where you live!
I would say silver with black chainring... General rule (that I just made up) of matching it to the wheels; with the rims being the chainring, and the spokes / hubs being the cranks.
I would fit mudguards and run a quill stem, with drops & levers for full winter hack mode, or battered risers and quill for full rat mode.

I think I prefer the look of the 1a to the Salsa FWIW
I do too, tbh.
I would welcome a cheaper source for 26.0 quill stems with a bit of rise (or for Decathlon to keep making their 25.4 compact drops).Salsa are nice enough but when you're really only after something that works, it is annoying that they cost £100, and something more or less the same with a 25.4 clamp is a tenner.

I've been riding it around for a few days already and it's pretty much dialled-in.
The stem could do with being a bit longer and taller, so I'm on the lookout for something 26.0 / 90mm / 0-5 degrees. Probably Salsa as I don't think anyone else makes them. Or maybe any old MTB stem if I can find a pair of those Decathlon 25.4 compact drops.
Eventually I'd also like to find a replacement stainless Tortec Epic rack (like the squashed one from the Dawes), but this one will do for now.

Spent last night wiring the rear dynamo. Never done that before so felt good. The wire goes down the DT and up the inside of the mudguard (with Gorilla tape, curious to see how long that lasts).
It was fun learning about connectors and heat-shrinking things.
Incidentally, all the wires and gubbins came with the new front light.Anyway, here are some pics of the full bike:

My Piegas got squashed recently, and I can defo confirm that they did bend... but I always thought the general consensus was very much against this kind of thing?
