i've been to laos. it's brilliant. nicest country in the world... can't recommend it enough. go to vietnam/thailand/wherever first, not afterwards and save laos for the last place you visit on your trip.
vientiane is nice but not particularly special. luang prabang though is incredible and easily one of the best places i've ever visited in my life.
roads throughout laos are pretty much dirt roads. bring a bike if you want to do it; the bikes that i saw there were mostly cheap chinese citybikes that looked like they were about to fall apart. we rented scooters and did a bit of touring, which was great.
pm me if you need more advice. but seriousy... go to laos.
thanks teddy. yea vietnam is amazing eh... been there three times and counting. it's only my favourite country in the whole world. after nz and uk of course :) but some say that laos is ever lovelier than vietnam so will have to check it out!
but yea i think i know what you mean about the chinese citybikes, sounds like the ones they have in VN, had to use my jandals to brake as the brakes didn't work that well... they also used wood stick things for pedals as they were all broken. i was just glad to be on two wheels so no complaints there.
thanks for the advice, will have to ask you about the scooter/touring thing too.
Laos is a really lovely country with friendly locals from what I saw. Didn't cycle there but the road down from Luang Prabang is seriously mountainous so you'll need stamina and a decent geared bike with tyres that can deal with dirt roads.
Enjoy.thanks for the tip Special K. yea been reading some blogs from the links above about guys that have done cycling through laos and they talk about 20km uphills then 15km downhills, through pretty atrocious terrains, so not sure if that's the best way to go about it for the kind of trip i'm thinking of. thinking of maybe just riding within the towns to be on the safe side. am sure it will be an awesome trip all the same! aw, can't wait now :)

Not really my kind or reading there, if you have anything in sci fi fantasy or gritty drama that would be cool. Travelogs are also usually welcome along with sociopolitical studies. I'll check the book is still in my library this evening and get back to you.
Great thanks The Seldom Killer! Yea sure, have some Travelogs kicking around too, thanks again. :)

really good guys in there! my bro and i went in a couple of nights ago at about 7:30pm (they close at 8 i think) and the guy was nice enough to let us stay on after closing time... totally unlike the local tesco that boots you out 10 mins before closing time and starts yelling into the PA system 5 mins before closing... shudder... tokyo fixed is fab

Been to Vietnam 3 times now, can't keep away... think you really see the "real" Vietnam if you head toward Central Vietnam imho… Hanoi (North) and Saigon (South) are the main places to go to if you’ve never been before, but Central is just lovely. Everyone is so friendly and always laughing at everything and anything! How awesome is that! Agree with Gustav - Quy Nhon was nice, super chilled out… as was Hue, and Da Lat is Vietnam like you’ve never seen before! It’s in the highlands so temperature is cool, its really pretty! If you have time, definitely check it out… try to see My Lai too, if you have time…
One of the best things about Vietnam is that everyone rides bicycles (esp in Central Vietnam), so you can rent one everywhere you go…
Make sure you also try:
1 – banh mi: filled baguettes, super yummy
2 – banh xeo: rice pancake thing, haven’t scoured a good one in London yet, so if anyone knows of any, let me know!!!
3 – dragon fruit (they are hot pink on the outside, white on the inside, I had this EVERYDAY when I was there)Be careful where you eat though, as nearly every one of my meat eating friends had the runs when they were there… I’m vegetarian and was totally fine the whole time I was there (fingers crossed the whole time)…

i love film, but just don't have to time to sit in front of the film scanner and scan them in. I love Lomo for it's ease of use and toughness being lugged around everywhere. I also have old russian zenit SLR with fisheye, tele, wide and macro, Rollei 35 + 35s, Ricoh 35Z, Yashica Electro 35 and a few others, all great, just big and cumbersome...
do it while you're surfing for bike p*rn... esp if you're scanning 35mm, a lot quicker than med format and the satisfaction you get from it is beyond comparison to a cd from the labs where the file sizes are about 920kb each...

omg vietnam is super amazing!!! it is only my favourite country in the whole wide world... after NZ and UK of course hehe... was there for a month last year... cycling in vietnam is prob the best way to get to know it and the people as lots of locals cycle there, esp in the smaller towns... i have the lonely planet guides for central and south central vietnam in soft copy so if anyone wants em, PM me...

yea i agree, never leave your bike unlocked, even the locals would tell you that...
loads of cobbles but not all are cobbled...you can hire a single speed from a local for about CUC 1 per day... cheaper if you hire it for longer, etc... the bicycles are usually pretty battered, which adds to the charm, and brakes don't really work that great, but all in all, cycling in cuba is totally lovely!
where else in cuba are you gonig to? i have a Havana lonely planet (sep 07 edition) staring at me in the face now you could have. not sure if there is a later edition than that. it will prob be similar to the time out one you have.
