Is there a standout make/model for manual grinders? I'm not looking for the Phil Wood of grinders, just something that'll last a bit.
Apologies if it's covered earlier in the thread, I've not spotted it.
I'm thinking about one of these http://www.orphanespresso.com/OE-PHAROS-Hand-Coffee-Grinder_ep_636-1.html
Hang on, it could be the Phil Wood of hand grinders! It hasn't been out long, but there is a link upthread, I think.

Remember the Athens Olympics? The UK press had a fucking field day predicting all sorts of gloom, because none of the venues would be ready on time. At least that isn't an issue here.
And remember the Beijing Olympics (air pollution scare) and the Dehli Commonwealth Games (athlete accommodation not ready/up to standard)?
Let's face it, our press loves to complain about problems - real and imaginary. My bet is on the prospect of tube strikes featuring on the front pages next spring. And for all the negative stuff I've read about the ticket ballot process in the last few weeks, I can't remember seeing anywhere a suggestion of a better way to have done it.

ooo. .claire that's a great tip on the bread crumbs. nice. I will try this with Tim at the weekend. (we are cooking together)
on a slightly different note, I need my knives resharpened. They're past the point where a steel will do. Does anyone know a good place to take them?
Ive googled and theres a place in Brockley but would prefer a place someone can reccommend.
Not really a recommendation, because I haven't used either myself, but I think that Divertimenti on Marylebone High St have a sharpening service. And there's a newish Japanese knife shop round the corner on Blandford St that do it as well.

Anyone having issues with their HTC clock being fast? Mine is ten mins fast and has been for a couple of days, despite being on auto updated time from network...Appears to be a worldwide htc issue affecting several handsets:

Same here - I noticed it on Saturday. Changed switched from automatic to manual to fix it.
On O2 with an unbranded Desire running Froyo.

*If you have not been allocated any tickets in the initial process, you will have the first chance to apply for tickets. This will be followed by a further chance for those who were allocated some or all of their ticket requests.
Second chance sales will include tickets for lots of great sport including Basketball, Beach Volleyball, Boxing, Canoe Sprint, Cycling (Women’s Mountain Bike), Football, Handball, Hockey, Taekwondo, Volleyball, Weightlifting and Wrestling. So there are plenty of other chances to be part of the greatest show on earth.*
ie all those sports not over subscribed! (and presumably, that's male beach volleyball?)

Anyone around here got some Portra NC 400 or 160 that I could buy and collect around Victoria/Central London before the weekend? 35mm.
I don't know if you would call it central, but you could try Process Supplies who are in Mount Pleasant.
They are running out of VC/NC Portra, but still show some of both in 160 in stock on their eBay page (would be worth calling first!). Looks like they only have the new 400.

Ok so maybe not so posh, but MOC and I are going to see an exhibition near Bethnal Green on Wednesday, any recommendations for somewhere nice to eat in the area?
Don't want to go any further east tbh as it's gonna take us ages to get back to Ealing as it is.You mentioned being a carnivore, so it has to be http://www.buenayre.co.uk/

Tis the season for souping.
I'm planning on making a different one each week.
Todays - Pea and Ham.
I bought a massive smoked ham hock in Budapest on the weekend.
Cover with water and boil for an hour (+ cloves, pepper corns and bayleaves).
Stick a lid on it and let it cool overnight.
Next day, scrap off all the fat thats congealed on top (bin it).
Take meat out, chop off bone into soup sized pieces and set aside.
Get 500g of split peas (I used yellow ones as I couldn't find green ones). Soak in cold water for an hour or so, rinse, then chuck into the water the ham was cooked in and boil for about 1.5hours til they fall apart.
In a frying pan, add onion, garlic, leek - sautee.
Chuck into pan with peas (I removed a bowl full cause I didn't want my soup too smooth).
Blend.
Chuck ham and reserved peas back in. Heat. Eat.
Awesome!I've done a slight variation (I don't blend and sauteed carrots and celery with the other veg) of this a few times and it's delicious and dead simple. I've tried smoked ham hocks, but prefer using unsmoked ones (I got mine from the butchers on Theobalds Road).
Think I used a River Cottage recipe as a guide.

Raising money and donating / giving it are two different things I think. I raised £2k for charity this year but I didn't donate any of that myself.
The first question should be: Do you support charities? Answers would be: No; Yes, by donating to them; Yes, by raising money for them; Yes, both. (Arguably could include volunteering in this)
Good points about the difference between fundraising and donating. Someone else has raised the issue of costs of fundraising, which usually turns me against 'chuggers' - it's always good to look at the admin costs of charities.
Ps - I work for a charity
Epic fail thread?
