I would have said get MegaBus there and possibly train back if the Mega bus wouldn't allow you to put the bike in the hold for journey back.

I've a set of Gigantex 38mm tubs on FRM carbon axled hubs, come with both a Campag and Shimano freehub. In very good order, I've actually got a set of new bearings for the hubs as well.
Fitted with 22mm conti 4000SII tyres that have loads of life left.

I have a pair of 25mm Schwalbe Ultremo Double Defence, one is boxed new, the other was fitted and used literally around the block (circa 3.5 miles) and still has the centre moulding present. These are superior to the Durano's that replaced them in my humble opinion, were going on my audax style bike but I plumbed for a pair of Panaracer Evo's instead in a 28 (cos I'm an old fat knacker these days!).

If you#re looking for really cheap then the Raleigh Pioneer hybrid was a solid steel framed bike that took 38mm tyres and some even had long drop calipers on them (as opposed to cantis/Vs). The modern versions usually came in alu, the Pioneer was originally in blue and white or red and white though the Pioneer Jaguar ( also steel) was dark green or pearlescent purple.
I also had one of the Muddy Fox ATB BITD but these come up spendy nowadays, they had the U shape calipers but they were really good stoppers.
There were also a few Reynolds 531 ATB bikes that used 26" wheels, you can pretty much convert anything to drops so options could be quite wide, problem with the 26ers is that the tyre choices are much less than they used to be since the 27.5/29er revolution, tyres like the conti travel contact might be ideal if you do go 26".

I've got a good condition up-angled stem in black, it's 90mm length but with the acute angle doesn't protude too far. Also have a set of good used unbranded V brakes and levers (one set of Vs will need pads) plus various used but very good condition grips.

No, not used them and they are claimed to be a non expedition rim as stated but actual build/skill of builder will dictate how much of a safe load, I've ridden open pros with 32 spokes with over 180kg on board (excl bike weight)
Carbide rims are different to ceramic and my experience of a set of Matrix 700C was positive, I've no reason to think the Rigida ones would be much if any difference performance wise.

Here's some chat about carbide rims https://yacf.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=5394.0 similar to one of the posters I've used std ceramic pads (WTB and kool stop) so you're not limited to the Swiss stop blue as SJS recommend but I know some people like to stick exactly to the letter/manufacturers spec.
I've always liked Rigida's anyway and never had a bad rim from them.
