Just got a new frame, apparently its english threading and so is the bb.
Ive just installed the drive side of this bottom bracket but theres a small but very noticeable gap, tried looking but its such a specific thing that I can't find an adequate answer.
Is it user error? bottom bracket shell deformed or badly faced?Ive tried taking it on and off making sure its aligned properly but not luck..
Someone please help me!!!! ARRRGGHHHH!! -
I'm building one of these up at the moment. I can't bring myself to change the colour so I'm leaving it in the original purple with the graphics. It looks pretty beat up but I kinda like it like that.
Did you have any troubles with the chainline? I've fitted a wider axle into my 120mm hub with axle spacers so I don't have to bend the stays. Got a 107mm BB but I think it's going to be ever so slightly out :(Super late reply but im not %100, but I just bought the appropriate bb for the cranks and the wheels came pre adjusted so not much help :-(
Ive been riding it solid for a couple of months now and havnt felt any play in the chain when riding really (prob a bit off but dont notice it), so I would say either change the bb to suit rear wheel or vice versa. -

i believe carlton did those wrapover stays. there is a "classic lightweights" website/forum out there which i looks to be a more specialized crowd for info.
does look very british indeed
Could be a Claude Butler frame? Lug work looks similar to this kind of design and a googling of butler sprint frames returns some similar looking work.
Other models also have similar work around the bottom bracket shell to what I can make out in your images.
Shame dropouts are horrible, and after a lot of googling I cant find a model that has those same style horizontal dropouts, seems strange they would appear on a frame with such nice lugs, perhaps these are custom? I do not know but hope this is some help...
Thanks for the help guys!
The headtube lugs looks to be nearly the same, except for the splitted spear. The fork looks basically identical, but that could mean the fork isn't original maybe.
hmm, my money's on it being a carlton at first glance, do a google image search for "Carlton track ends" and you'll see that they made fugly track ends a bit of a trademark. Also the wrapover stays being reasonably round in section is pretty common on Carlton.
There's a good webpage here http://www.carltoncycles.me.uk/
it has plenty of stuff about the marque including frame number database
and lug catalogues... http://www.carltoncycles.me.uk/details/lugwork-p.htm & http://www.carltoncycles.me.uk/details/lugwork.htm
a quick look at that should confirm one way or the other.
Claud Butler is also a good shout, I had a frame once that I was convinced was a Carlton Python and turned out to be a Claud.. Again your in luck in terms of web resources, there's an excellent set of catalogues here... http://homepage.ntlworld.com/nkilgariff/ClaudButler.htm
and plenty of photos here (of both Clauds and Carltons) - http://www.classiclightweights.co.uk/readers_bikes.html
Hope this helpsThanks for the links RVL, gonna have a good look through that ntlworld link when I get home tonight and see If I can source any more info.
Might make a current project thread once I get the frame with more info. One more thing, I need to build my friend a bike and have two choices..
Sell him this frame and replace it with a F R Russel track frame in slightly more original state, less fancy lugs and with what I think is a small dent in the down tube for myself.
What would be worth more?
I'm indecisive over looks vs function, as obviously the lugs look much better than the F R Russel, but then the F R has a better fit at 58ct 53ttIve got a feeling this frame is going to be slightly too small for me in the long run as I'm currently riding a 55 square track and is feeling pretty good with mavic tt bars (still adjusting)
-
Don't really know why I went for this frame, maybe in the hope its some sort of english framebuilder but I managed to get it for a decent price so Im not complaining much.
Not much info from the seller, but the seatpost is 27mm has wrapover seatstays, some slightly fancy lugs and what I think are really horrible dropouts.
Ive got a spanish and a french track frame, but would really like it to have something british too, or even better from London.
Excuse the poor photos but still havnt actually got the frame, any help would be much appreciated!!Thanks

Anyways,
heres a small list of stuff I still need, if you do happen to see anything let me know and ill most prob buy it :-)
Rims - Akront,Tubs or Clinchers
Tyres - No idea what would be the 'period' correct, according to the sheet up top some d'alessandro leggerissimo. But find very little info on them on google.
maybe these actually, anyone have any info please please let me know

Seatpost - 26.2mm Zeus or Triplex,
Could also be tempted with a 26.4mm for the right price, would sand it down to fit. If you got one holla.

Misc. - Tubular holder, zeus bar ends (super want), jersey, cap, water bottle, musette. Most of this is just to have on my shelf for show and this just for zeus collector lols \/\/\/

Will work towards having it ready to ride (with different wheels) by the Ldn to Cambridge ride. Alright, enough rambling, back to work for me.

Production week at uni so its time to be productive..
Well at least try.
This is my treasure chest
And here it is opened
Bought some Christophe straps in what I thought was a natural brown but it turns out it was more of a essex fake tan orange cream colour... ugh.
Took out my machete/scalpel and shaved it all off leaving just the raw leather which I think suits much more. Put them together and here they are.Polished up the cranks and chainring I got from Hilary Stone a good while back, not 100% smooth and shiny but much better that what they were. Also got the front hub done.
Mums bought me some nail polish to give the inside of the holes a repaint. Will probably paint in the inside of the chainring and see what it looks like, kinda like this

This guy did it with blue but it looks kinda horrible.
Will also do the fork crown holes as that could look kinda funky in white rather than black. As the frame is most probably be painted in a similar shade of metallic blue.Took some photos in the last bit of light but most all came out blurry and sh*t. Should really be documenting it with a better camera as the pieces/bike deserves it but I don't really do digital.
-
shame bout them handlebars.. really looked like quite well until that mishap.. dedication!
this really is a great project, and props too for the documentation! looking fwd!
Thanks :-)
I know, but thats what happens when you loose concentration and try to work too quickly. Got some new ones from here all marked up and ready to have another go. -

Slowly but sure the pieces of the puzzle are coming together. Bought these off ebay for good price of 60 quid, they had some play when spun so just cleaned and re-greased them. Will have them polished up in the near future.

Nice bit of engraving on the axle, heres a scan from the catalogue.

Got a few things on the way in the post, won an Arius Imperator on ebay at a reasonable price, 8quid postage was a killer though :-( Sellers photos will do it more justice than my digital camera can.
Also does anyone know what kind of paint/ink is used for the Imperator stamp? as it could do with a bit of touching up. Im thinking maybe something oil based that wont stain or come off too easily. Also someone get this for me for christmas but in blue. Pretty please :-)

Got some track pedals in the post from ebay, they looked pretty battered but thought they could look pretty decent after a good polish.
Bunked off uni for a bit and went to see an old friend with the right tools. Spent about a half hour on these using a polishing wheel, they're still not finished but will look decent after some dremel polishing on the inner sides. Heres some before and after photos. Not bad eh.
Also started on the bars. Went for the straight holes with 3 on either side at the bottom. After the first few holes of 9mm all was going well, I was getting into the flow of it but realised I wouldn't be able to do the ones round the top curve with the drill press. Got as far up as I could so started then started on the right side. Then went for the 10.5mm and widened the bottom ones a bit. Did take some photos in process but they are all on my shitty phone.
Two holes in and I started to find it was extremely hard to try and clamp the bar in a good place for the right side and lower the press and this happens. All was going alright then f*****d it right up, As much as I want to carry on its really not worth it, the holes are just too close together and really don't want to compromise my safety for what really is only a 'cool' idea that might look alright.
I basically didn't clamp the bar in straight therefore that happened. Oh well.. need to get hold of a new pair now. If anyone has some going cheap, the more beaten up the better then let me know, don't want to spend more than £20max really.
Also need to really look into the design again and the maths of how far apart the holes should be and work out an equal distance and width, so its roughly equal all around the bar.

Excuse the size but stumbled upon this while looking through some catalogues, could be of use to someone

Turns out the cinelli criterium bar is 26mm clamp sized and the stem is 25.4mm. The clamping area is all fucked anyway so will sand that down at some point, make a plan to drill some holes, drill and then polish all shiny and that. This website gives a small insight on things but does anyone on here have any technical knowledge on doing something like this?
Will prob only do the 52t and 49t Chainring, Bars and maybe seatpost. Will star on the bars, im thinking something along the lines of these. T

Doing more research I've come across a few places saying its dangerous to drill bars, but how much weight/power stress does it take to break them if I was to drill them in a similar pattern to the top photo?
I would imagine to drill less at the top than the bottom half to keep the stem to bar strength?
I don't want it too look too tacky too, so maybe just some sort of gradual fade from the rear of the top of bars to the top of the bottoms as it will be hidden by the tape. Keeping the aerodynamics too (Like I know what Im talking about). Basically like the photo but in more of an triangle shape like this \/\/---==:::{
What you guys recon? Will draw up some ideas in the meantime -
Big ups to everyone who participated and helped organise, especially Earthloop. Wicked day out and thanks to everyone for the laughs and food offerings. Was good riding through some old places, bringing back some good memories.
Highlights for me was going down the A312,
Going past a donkey in Fairlop/Hainault area,
DASin random cyclist/people along the way,
Stopping traffic by stopping in their lane and doing some skywalker-use-the-force manoeuvre (felt really like, yeah im part of a cycle club dance move),
Those epic so tired I'm in overdrive sprints especially the embankment tunnel sprints screaming one pound fish song.Large up everyone who I managed to speak to as well, some quality banter and laughs were had. Im surprised there wasn't more pink spokes and njs frames etc.
Anyways this needs to be done again in the summer!

I think the wheelbuilding section on this could be very usefull to people, if it hasnt been posted already
http://home.fuse.net/pieper/sutherland's%20handbook%20for%20bicycle%20mechanics.pdf

Many thanks for all your help, photos are confusing but its just one side turned upside down to show how one side lays flat and the other doesnt, not both side of the bb.
I just got quoted £30 by one of my locals, and £10 by another...
I think the frame is fucked with more dents than the seller said and a small ripple near the head lugs.
Its a shame because I really like the frame and it woulda fit me perfectly.....
