i don't mind these threads. Things change when new products come out, and so does public opinion. Mooooooost important though, is that getting a new bike is FUN. It SHOULD be talked about. This is a fucking bike forum. I don't care it's 11 bucks or 1100 bucks. Those long threads citing all the OTP bikes are pretty useless anyway. Not to mention boring as fuck.
My advice from a distance is to do away with the concerns you cited. Weight is simply NOT an issue. Color might be at first, in your opinion, but its going to get all scratched and dented up anyway. It's your first ride and as long as you don't polish it nightly, it will develop character.
That said, the most important thing is that you get a bike that rolls. It's really that simple. "i need a bike" Ok, Get one.
The second important thing is that this should be a learning experience and so if you can get it worked out, you should really try piecing it together on your own from used parts. Start with an old nice frame, and get help. You interested enough to want to learn this crap.
I would look for a used Surly Steamroller frame set and go from there with help from a friend in person. I don't like the Volume or the Charge. Very boring. The Steamroller has fancy dropouts, and a much prettier fork crown. Something like this will come with a headset most likely. I wouldn't be surprised if you get a stem in the deal as well. Any other parts you get are a bonus.
the rest of the parts you have to sort really won't be too difficult if you have help, and when you get it all together you'll feel better about it than if it were some OTP neon thing.

as someone that comes from racing DH and riding street MTB for 8 years, i totally understand this guys attitude. I love fixed gear, but tricks on them are just meh and it needs to stop. ( BTW, that dancing flatland leotard girl crap is amazing, but just has no style and i'd rather leave the bleachers to get a snow cone) If you want to ride street on 700c for the speed in the city AND do tricks, get 36 spokes, fatter tires, a freewheel and a brake on your volume cutter. You will have so much more fun and you will be doing bigger tricks. Theres just no advantage to a fixed for tricks like this.
thats just my opinion.

cheers. yeh, never been one for matching wheelsets. just use what i have lying around
i guess at the end of the day it's a pursuit frame with risers, so it's always gonna look odd/ a bit stupidobviously, but if you cover the front of the bike with your hand, and then the rear, there's marked difference in the sweetness factor. I ride a completely indestrucible POS every day, built form whatever is around, so i get what you're saying. Just that with a black rear wheel, it'd be really nice looking.

Its so funny to think back to the looking part i dont have a big house but i looked all over including in the cuboard under the stairs just in case in some drunken stupor i had decided that was a safe bike store (shows how drunk i was still when i woke up). It turned out it was in the hall that connects the upstaris flat, front door was wide open and my flat door was on the latch
yea mine was on the steps, just a half flight up from the alley. Wonder it wasn't taken, along with the food in my fridge, and the car from my garage.
My worst escapades come from when i was in Wash DC and putting back cheap beers from 3PM on every day. Combine that with friends that have no morals, an arc welder, a penchant for "rescuing" old bikes from the dumpster and the immaturity to think that mutilated bikes are fun, and you've got disaster. Broken teeth, concussions... it's a wonder i've sorted myself out as well as i have.

This really worries me when i do this i wake up and run and check to see if my bike is in the hall way cause i have no idea if i would have had enough sense to take it inside or even if i rode it home, i then sit and think about the stupidity of what i have done but deep down know next friday will be the same
i've gotten up looked all over for my bike and found it outside with my keys in the door handle.
