Anyone got a vice? And a blow torch? I have a stuck seatpost in a frame I recently inherited and want to get it on the road for Sally.
I have a blow torch but no vice. Not many vices either.
Blow torch could be a bit extreme!
Is it a steel frame and ally seatpost? I think you can dissolve ally with bicarb or somesuch if you don't mind sacraficing the post.

The Contax T arrived on Tuesday. It is a thing of beauty.
It feels a lot more solid than the Olympus XA and the Canonet, but I guess it was probably more expsensive than both of them when new and still today!)
My example thus far appears to be in first rate condition with one or two slight marks in the finish, but no dings or dents.
The handling is not as good as the XA. The ergonomics of the XA are simply unbeatable. Th Contax by comparison is a bit fiddly, opening the front cover is not a one handed job like the clamshell XA, and when open, the cover is a bit in the way of the focusing and aperture controls, so from an ergonomics perspective, the XA wins.
The winder on the Contax is lovely, it has a short, but quite thumbable (is that a word) lever that clicks flush into the body when not in use, but it has a second click position where it is perfect for quick winding.
The rangefinder on the Contax is beter than the XA and has a smother, better damped action which feels more acurate.
As to the optics, I am only half way through my first roll so I might be able to post some images at the weekend.

a naim 90/92 a rega turntable that hardly gets used. at the moment just mp3's and radio but would like to eventually get something like a naim unitiq dac/amp/streamer thingy
Great stuff, my cousin's 90/92 combo and CD3 driving a pair of Royd Minstrels circa 1995 got me interested in hifi when I was 17. I had never heard anything like it at the time.
For years I had to make good with a begged and borrowed Richer Sounds rig, but when I started working, and could afford it, I bought an old Naim 42.5 and 160 (still use the 160!).
I used to have a Planar 3 which I upgraded over the years (changed everything apart from the platter and the main bearing) never been a better turntable for the money. In fact when I bought my Gyrodec, I couldnt bring myself to sell the Rega, and it has been on long term loan to a mate of mine in Paris for about 5 years.
I've not had a go on any of the recent Naim digital stuff, I imagine its probaly great. As a company they seem content to wait until they have got a format right, before rushing to get the latest bit of kit into the market.

Those remind me of some Acoutic Energy AE1's that a hifi shop in Leeds played to me about 15 years ago. They were demonstrating to me (a poor student, just starting out on his hifi adventures)that small does not mean no bass.
The AE1's were on the end of some serious kit, I cannot remember what it was, and they were amazing. Tight tuneful bass, but with convincing impact.
If the Xeros are anything like the AE1's, they should be great.
What source and amps do you have?

i'd like to know this too! (if you don't mind)
i love my contax but i'd never pay what they go for on ebay...
Too much probably, but it is supposed to be in good condition, and if I get on well with it, I can see it becoming a "take everywhere" camera.
Once it arrives I'll admit how much I paid for it.

Try this again, this time with 24 hours notice:
1830 at the Peasant (south of Angel tube junction of St John St/Percival St N1) for a ride up to the Flask on Tuesday.
As always all welcome.
I hope you take your new disciples up Swains.

I picked up an old Olympus XA last week (inspired by this thread).
The rangefinder had an odd fault where it was fine moving the focus towards infinity, but would then return very slowly toward the minimum distance. It would take about 5 seconds for the rf patch to float back. Most odd I thought.
So I attacked it with a screwdriver. My god, there are a lot of very small delicate bits in that camera!
Fortunatly with a bit of help from the interweb and a repair manual downloaded, I was able to remove the rangefinder mechanism, adjust the spring which was stuck, I then used a tiny dab of nail varnish (my wifes) on a needle to lock the screw in place.
I put it all back together and hey presto, it seems ok.
I put a roll of Trix through it yesterday, dev'ed it last night and scanned a couple of frames this morning. So far so good.
The biggest problem with the XA, was that whilst looking for information for the repair, I got reading about other compact rangefinders. I then stumbled across the Contax T.
In a momment of madness, I purchased one from an online shop in Hong Kong. It should arrive next week.....

Didn't know Homer was a darkroom jockey
! Looks like Barney has put in a bid.......
Have they opened the bag in the light to photograph the paper?
Is it not now all exposed?

I think some people have had limited success developing as black and white. There is quite a lot on flickr and apug about it.
