Yeah, fitness for purpose is what l had in mind. Of course, design overlap can be accommodated within certain tolerances and theres always user preferences/bias and, of course, as the above poster has pointed out the very nature of this forum! l guess l like my bikes to perform a particular function(s) well and not deviate too much in its designated use, the component choice is über exotic - that clavicula/rohloff/edge drive system has to be the only one in the world! but how many tourists would choose this? I personally couldn't see myself stripping it down to run as fixed and rebuild as rohloff tourer. However, the frame and components fulfil the owners needs, and the builder and customer are happy then great! There are people who tour the world on a penny farthing ;)
-
missed the bottle cage but another example of compromise which effectively limits the functionality or design for a given purpose. Given the nature of a tourer, it should be adaptable, but if it suits your requirements then fine.
Maybe l'm an old fart but carbon and touring (especially off-road) are somewhat incongruous. Laughed that the couplers didn't come with its dedicated spanner?! What about end caps to protect them in transit? Still... very interesting bike and l hope it provides you with many happy years of cycling! Be interested to hear what light you will be running?

"Eccentric build" as someone noted but what is it meant to be exactly?
I'm not a big fan of having a design compromised to achieve multiple uses, best to design/build fit for (singular or dual) purpose(s) IMHO. Beefy Schmidt/Rohloff/disks and Clavicula cranks and Edge rims appear jarring. However, Mather's craft appears v.v.nice. What front light will the Schmidt driving? -
Arrived home to find my Edelux has arrived from Spa - brilliant service!
Opening the parcel, it's just a friggin light but its fucking gorgeous!
Quickly wired it up, spun the wheel and shone the light into the back garden. OOOOooooooooo... a night ride tonight if there's a break in the crap weather. -
Ta for your comments. I'm going for it as l just sold my dual E6s. These were fine except for slow speed, manually turn the secondary on-off, plus l free up a plug for a charger. Like yourself, l have tried the cateye, knog, dinottes and the E6s were a revelation.
Yes, from what l heard/read the optimum mount position is around the fork crown, although l need to devise a mount for my front rack.
-
I love my schmidt son/edelux combo. The drag is just noticable on the stand spinning the wheel when you switch the light on and off. When riding i don't notice it at all on my tank of a surly. Maybe if you were doing night TTs it'd matter tho ;)
Light output is unreal, i have the version that clips the top of the beam to stop it dazzling cars. Even pointed straight down in front of the wheel it chucks out a ton of light. From what lights did you upgrade from and how have you mounted the edelux?

Can all those who have expressed interest please check their PM's and let me know as l want this distraction to end ASAP! I spent over 2hours late night replying to over 70 pm's, updating, packing, weighing, checking postal quotes, more emailing, blah blah... ;) Will want to do one big drop at the post office Monday a.m. strikes permitting. To all those who have bought stuff - many thanks!
-
I see the pic of the SON E6/E6Z lights has the dynohub itself shown - is this for sale? Included?
If so dibs ...
Bargain of the year if this was true ;)
OK, l gotten myself into a right mess for not stating clearly what l posted above, and people either PM'ing and thread posting is confusing too for the order, and then not saving the replies l've sent so l no longer know who's in line for what. Can those who l have replied to please get back to me. Sincerest apologies to all. Complete Utter FAIL!
OK, l finally worked through PM's, back to work. will check back tomorrow!

sorry to hear of crash, injuries look nasty. collarbones are iffy and 4 breaks will be lengthy physio. Mine was similar and its coming upto 2years, had the physio, MRI, got keyhole surgery next followed by more physio, etc. its the pits. I'm with CTC - highly recommend, very thorough. make sure you don't accept any global offers until you feel 100% right as any comp paid will quickly dwindle if you have to fork out for additional treatment.

S24O's = Sub-24 overnights. its a Grant Peterson (Rivendell) concept for those short of time to do "proper touring". Basically, ride out to city limits/green space, camp and back for breakfast - excellent fun!
http://www.rivbike.com/article/bike_camping/camping_vs_touring
http://www.rivbike.com/article/bike_camping/a_kit_for_one_night_outMy super C's are an older type but are plenty roomy and the clasps are excellent, re-treated with wax and good as new. l think the current model might be slightly larger but not much.
Yes, larger tyres for rough stuff+weight. luggage weight is dead weight which is what does the damage on wheels. -
thought l logged on to CTC for a sec! :)
packlists are dependant on the tour type as already mentioned. l would add, how optimistic you are feeling!
all good advice so far above. l like to travel light/fast/self-sufficiency. you can save space/weight in myriad ways, eg., dual-use items, no bulky electronics, why people take laptops or DSLRs with 3 lenses l shudder! l can't get going in the morning without a brew or 3 and rolling into a village to sample their local produce is one of the best parts of cycle touring. cold food, dehydrated meals and cous-cous only go so far. my favourite bit of kit is the wood stove.
my audax bike has 700x28 36spoke wheels, used for S24O's with just a saddlebag and bits strapped/stuffed onto rack/back pockets. 700x35 36h wheels loaded with carradice super C's + bar bag for 2weekers.
I've short toured most of UK, parts of France, would love to do a expedition tour in future, maybe trans-Americas, or silk road.

How well do those berthoud guards cope with tight calipers? Currently have some plastic SKS ones and they do flex slightly when hard braking.
NB, Nitto racks may look nice but they are a PITA to fit, lots of different sized nuts/bolts that require 4/5 different tools, and are high(er) maintenance. Tubus, whilst not as nice looking, are dead easy to fit, bit cheaper and great.
