yeah i had that at first! I think the problem is in order to learn it you have to see it over exaggerated really. Maybe a good way to try and do it is keep it to nice tights s's almost like the pull in breast stroke making sure shoulders come out of the water each stroke i.e your back should hurt after a while if you're doing it right haha!
(Hello!) I've only been doing full fly for the past month or so, I have done fly kick and half fly (arms either side) for a few years... anyway....after full fly my hip flexors and butt ache Oh and Shoulders.......

I have my 1600 metre crawl down to just above 26 mins now. I aim to break the 25 min mark soon. Is this a good time? My aim is to start doing triathlons once I get some running shoes and see how my back holds out.
1600 ? 64 lengths ? in 26 minutes ? Thats very good.
I think the quickest time i have recorded on a 1500 swim of mine has been 25 minutes. I really must get a good swim watch ! Ahhhh more money :(
Weldone :)

Re wetsuits - really good swimmers usually don't benefit at all from a wetsuit. I gain about 30 seconds on 400m with one.
This morning swam the whole session without wetsuit at the Tooting Lido. Temp 17 degrees. After initial shock - just fine for 2k.
You do realise, that over 3.6k, you would save over 4 minutes !!!
I would be very happy with that gain !
Basically I am neutral, maybe positive buoyancy in water, so most wetsuits are too buoyant in the legs for me.... I need at least a neutral suit. ( i float )
May aswell bloody swim it without !
-
-
^ wetsuit floating is to your advantage
It feels so weird though, my legs are too high to kick and my shoulders are getting fatigued at around 1500, which is way too soon, as i need to do 3.6k !
I dont think my suit is too tight, maybe too thick on the mm main panels, but im not buying another suit, as id rather swim it without a suit anyway.
Although I would like to try a sleeveless shortie.......

I find that thinking of giant catfish in the Thames has exactly the same effect on me as when I cycle. I keep thinking that any moment something is going to grab my foot, just like I keep thinking the next car is going to hit me. It gets the adrenalin flowing.
I am just off to swim a new stretch, Mapledurham to Pangbourne and back
about 4 kms, entirely rural, and teeming with Wels catfish! (hope not!)
Lovely day for it.Spoke to a regular OW swimmer re the catfish and he said not a problem where the river swim is...... we will see... ;)
-
Dooks, where abouts are you based ?
Weldone re the Tri !I tried the Tuesday night at EDSC which was 9-10pm, and i couldnt sleep till 1am.
So am giving up on any Masters for the moment. I may look again in October, when OW season is hibernating.....
At the moment am concentrating on Hampton swim and possibly a few other OW swims after that too.
The masters trials gave me alot of ideas for my own training though, and have now changed my 4xweek swims. More sprint/interval/fly and drils.Am off to Brockwell Lido in a bit.... sun is shinning :)

Dooks - How was yesterday ???
Im off to Brockwell shortly.
Went up pool to practice Breaststroke and fly yesterday.
Broke my breaststroke down to kick first and it was hard ! When i tried to put it all together again i couldnt get it..... i am now learning breast stroke all over ! Basically my kick was scissoring....
On the plus side, I managed 120m of full fly !! Am happy with that ! -
**Britain's biggest fish caught in Thames **
By Rod Gilmour Last updated: July 15th, 2008
1 Comment Comment on this article“It’s deja-vu time. It’s time to show up and man up. This really is the last-gasp saloon.”

What a catch: Brett Ridley (right) with his Thames catfish
Dean Macey’s quote prior to his attempts, and ultimate failure, to qualify for the Beijing decathlon shows what British athletics will be missing during the Olympics. Raw, passionate and gutsy, the Canvey Islander has now decided to call time on his injury-prone career.
Beijing’s loss is angling’s gain. Macey, Angling Times columnist and ambassador for the sport’s federation, can now focus on his love for carp.
It’s been a busy time in the world of angling, too. Fish ‘O’ Mania XV is set to cast off on Sky Sports this weekend while the Telegraph can now put to bed extended rumours surrounding catches of large specimen catfish, which often lack photo evidence to back up wild claims made on internet chatrooms.
Brett Ridley, a 28-year-old labourer, recently caught what is believed to be the biggest ever fish in British running waters. It took 45 minutes to land his Wels catfish on the Kingston stretch of the River Thames -
The Thames used to teem with eels, and they were easy to catch. They were popular among the poor because they were cheap and nutritious, and they kept well, because they can live for a few days at least out of water. They don't go off!
They are now rare and the last eel catcher (in Norfolk) has had to stop. They won't trouble you while you are swimming.
The Wels catfish can grow huge, and are often attracted to things that splash. People have let some go in the Thames. There was one in the Kennet near where I live. When my kids were small we were all splashing in the river with the dogs and I spotted this huge shape swimming towards us. It was about 4 or maybe 5 feet long! I swum over that spot last week, with my heart in my mouth (and a very steady splashless breaststroke!)
There were cases in a lake in Germany last year where people were being bitten by them!
If you fancy a swim in the river let me know, I could ride down that way and meet up. You can distract the catfish for me!Thanks for that adroit ! Just what I need to make me focus ! Gees ! ;)

have to consult the bank balance first. am poor at the moment. i hate being poor.
hey did you know that all european and american eels were all born in the same place? It's a single area in the sargasso sea where ALL the eels spawn and hatch. then, as tiny little larvae, they swim right across the ocean and eventually up various rivers and streams to spend their lives in ponds and lakes. then when they're fully grown they swim all the way back to the same single place to start all over again. weird eh?
No way ! Thats really interesting and I learneded something ! :)
I am always poor.... I have two kids ! Love you Kids ! xxx

they're all around £35. RNLI long series are cheaper I think, but i then have to travel further ....
It's so close to me I should do it ! Im scared of murky, deep water, currents and possibly drowning....?
Its not the distance, its the unknown ! Why am i so neurotic !? ( sorry another entire thread there !) -
fanks nick nack.
think i may have overdone it at masters last night. am shattered today.
warm up 800m alternating free and back
10 x 50m fly kick. odd 50s "dolphin" (arms by the sides, underwater) even 50s inverted.
400m backstroke pull, one-armed up, full stroke back, alternating left and right for the one arms.
8x25m breaststoke sprintsmain set freestyle:
6x100m on 1:50
100 easy
6x100m on 1:45
100 easy
6x100m on 1:40ouch!
managed the 1:50s no bother. was getting over 15 seconds rest. thought "this is easy!"
lead on the 1:45s and nearly died. was getting only 5 seconds rest.
decided we couldn't maintain 1:40 or we'd be swimming straight though so did another set on 1:45s and alternated the lead.just about squeaked home in 90 minutes. shattered.
Signing up for Middlesex Masters on June 5th today though. Haven't done a "Gala" since i was 12!
Hope there'll be penny sweets in the foyer afterwards. I'm getting cola bottles, flying saucers, a fireball and and a metal mickey!
Yowzer Dooks ! ..... hope I dont have to do that tonight at *club..... cant believe I decided I'd rather a few 90 minutes sessions ! Talk about gluton for punishment ! Scared !
Really want to do that above swim, but am doubting myself because I dont OW swim regularly.... do you think 8 weeks of cold lido swimming in a wetsuit will be enough training ?
Its funny the other day when driving back from hampton pool, we drove through thames ditton and surbiton and i wondered whether i could swim in the thames there, its quite wide and tranquil.... now I want to sign up !!
-
