I've seen this reported a few times in the past and had weight training suggested as a means to ensure healthier bones. I doubt the affect on your average cyclist will be very noticeable, especially one who lives a relatively active lifestyle anyway, e.g. someone who will walk the 5 mins to the shop rather than drive. But for the people who eat, sleep and work on the bike, it could cause issues if no preventative action is taken.
I'm not an expert so I could be completely bulshitting here, but that's what I've read.

I managed to break the chain, rear axle, dent the rim, bend the rear dropouts, and ruin many a crank arm (cycling with it loose) on my old mountain bike. But that was mainly my fault.
On me racer someone thought it would be a good idea to T-Bone me. Both wheels like pringles, bent chainrings, torn bar tape (ok, thats not so bad), damaged shifters, damaged pedals, damaged bars. She pretty much damaged everything, somehow the aluminium frame held its own!
-
I'd go with what Richard Cheese said about filing with a round file, will make sure you get it even on both sides of the dropout then.
If you dont have a file you could drill the dropouts, as this would also be self centreing. Just have to be careful not to drill too far up and take out more of the frame then you intended to. -

I noticed in Italy that drivers seemed to cradle their phones with their shoulders, so that they could have both hands free for gesticulation while they were talking. I wish I was joking.
Did you also notice in Italy how there are LOADS of bikes, and there don't seem to be any rules of the road, but it still looks safer than over here?

Heh, I once got onto the pavement to pass a lorry just before a cycle lane started, stopped at some lights a bit further down and a woman pulls up having a go at me.
"You just cut me up!"
"Oh, I'm sorry"
Now, here is where it really should have ended, she shouldn't have been on the pavement in the first place and I should have waited behind the lorry. Both in the wrong, but I decided I wouldn't point out her failing and just apologise. Then:
"I had to slam on my brakes!"
"I'm sorry"
"Yeah, you pulled out right in front of me and I had to brake really hard"
"Sorry"
At this point the lights changed so I just rode off. I wonder what she would have said if I had pointed out that actually she shouldnt have been on the fucking pavement you fucking bitch, and how can I "pull out" when I have to step up a kerb? Thats right, STEP up, I fucking put my feet on the floor and walked on the pavement and you're having a go at me? Bitch. That turned into a bit of a rant but I feel a lot better now!

there wasnt a train to miss one, at Victoria there was a big sign saying there was rail work on till the 28th
Reminds me of the time I had to cycle 30 miles home when all I wanted to do was get the train and spend the rest of the day recovering from yesterdays ride. All because of a little rain that stopped the trains.
I was not a happy bunny.

no - if the old speed was v, the new speed is 1.03 v and the KE changes from 1/2 M v^2 to 1/2 M (1.03 v)^2 = 1/2 M 1.03^2 v^2 = 1/2 M 1.0609 v^2
So, does that mean the 5mm makes a big difference, and we should be worrying about getting the perfect crank length, or can we assume the 5mm is a small distance so the difference it'll make will also be small?

49.8 mph on a geared bike downhill from bath uni into town, never managed to grow a big enough pair to go any faster than that as its a busy road with lots of side roads coming off it!
Is that Bathwick Hill? You must be crazy to go down there at that speed, I shit myself at 30 last time I went down there! Seriously, cant see that far ahead, lots of side roads, buses stopping just around corners, and normally a bit of traffic to boot!
You're either a lot braver than I am, or a lot stupider. Either way I am impressed!

Hey nicknoxx, I'm from Bath too, but down on the south coast studying most of the time. I've not done a lot of riding back home, you know any good routes? I tend to just go out on a short hill ride, up Bathwick Hill or Ralph Allen Drive and come home.
Did Bath to London last summer though, thats a nice route -
