its good to have your d-lock in hands reach wile riding.
Except that a scumbag who is willing to beat you up to steal something is likely to be much better in a fight than you are, will take that D lock off you and beat you to a bloody pulp with it. Same thing with a knife, TBH, but kids don't seem to understand that.

Cable operated disc brakes are the perfect solution for a tourer I would think- plenty of power, no clearance issues.
That is all true, but disc brakes do mean that the fork legs (and seat stays) need to be much stiffer to cope with the forces imposed by the brakes. As a result, the bike tends to have a slightly harsher ride. Aside from issues of rim wear, cantilever brakes really are the perfect touring bike solution.

No worries. It just seemed like there was an option there that might not have been thought about. I'd definitely recommend you test build it before you hack the canti bosses off so you don't do something you regret later.
The amount of hassle and faff with cantis is, IME, directly related to which cantilevers you fit to begin with. I had Shimano R550 brakes on my Cross Check and they were no more hassle than V-brakes to set up and run.

I'm not actually taking any new orders at the moment....too many on the books.
Once the list is a bit shorter i'll start accepting orders again.BMX Kid, think you'll have a wait, even to get on the list. But for info, the small Bill is the same size as the Archie, just with fewer pockets (large Bill is same size as the Theo).

This is clearly an attack carried out by complete scumbags.
However, an alternative point of view regarding the reporting is what has the fact he was riding a bike got to do with anything, other than to sensationalise (or otherwise) the headlines? A man was attacked by four youths, he happended to have been riding his bike at the time.
It's a bit like a 'Father of two attacked' headline. Is the emphasis on the fact the person was a father supposed to make the crime appear worse than if the victim was single and had no kids?

The frame will form the base for a new tourer ... and I'd like to have STIs and calipers rather than bar end shifters and cantis.
Removing the cantilever bosses is easy enough, but I don't understand why you would want to? A touring bike should have the option of full mudguards and racks to make long journeys more comfortable as well as larger volume tyres. Getting the clearance for the tyres and 'guards is really easy with cantilever brakes but rather difficult with regular (modern) calipers.
Why not STIs and cantilevers? They are compatible, you don't have to use bar end shifters...

I can't help but reflect that, as far as I can tell, the entire effort of the Police is to get bicycles registered on Immobilise so that it is easier to get them back to the owner after they've been stolen. There doesn't appear to be much effort at actually apprehending thieves, not preventing theft in the first place by addressing the market for these stolen bikes (I suspect similar arguments could be made for all sorts of property theft).
The argument appears to be: 'Your bike will be stolen, but tell the Police you own it and if we happen to find it you might get it back'.
Reassuring, really, and yet more support for taking control of this yourself. Buy decent locks, use them properly, think about where you lock your bike, and have insurance for when the inevitable happens.

Cheers Adam, thanks for the tip on the Secu-clips - I wasn't aware that they could be bought separately - I'll pick up a pair from SJS!
No worries at all. They do make life sooo much easier.
Of course, I'm just about to replace my SKS fenders with a set of Gilles Berthoud metal ones powder coated to match the frame, so no more quick release for me. :^(
But they'll look great! :^)
