I have an early 90s steel trek in the shed. Not a step through; there were very few of them, but it's a compact frame so it may suit her. Photos etc when it's extracted from the shed.

Considering getting one …. Decathlon bikes have hacking potential . Solid frames , reasonable parts, and the potential to alter or upgrade from your parts box.
The Riverside 900 is another bike with the potential to become something different

I assume you are referring to the Decathlon bike. Don't you think there's a bit of Gravel Tax in it's pricing?

I did try them with mini vs. Had too much shudder and only just had mudguard clearance at the front. Deore V brakes worked much better..

Mini Vs, as I found, were not the answer..

Can't remember the model number but SJS cycles will have them. Pull the right amount of cable and they are cheaper than the Crane Creek version and , so I am told , better. Can be uncomfortable if they are set up with the levers pointing too far up.

The bike for me...

My cantilever ambivalence arose when I set up a bike (Brother Kepler) with them last year and then vowed to never do so again.

On my Kaffenback I use Deore V brakes with Tektro levers. Much easier to set up, great braking , and as good or better than cable disks. Gear shifts are made through friction bar ends...

What reviews that there are come from France. The reviewers like the bike but are unimpressed by the wheels and tyres.

Sounds like we are returning to 80s tourers ( Claude Butler Majestics , Holdsworths etc) with double chainsets. The standard issue back then was an SR 50/32 up front with a 30/32 5 speed on the back.

The centre pull revival is coming!

I had Suntour Retrofiction levers fitted to my touring bike in 84-87.. Yes, they had a lovely feel.
I think I have a band on set in a box somewhere as well as some Suntour mechs of the same vintage.
