'Tis fair and valid to say if you're going to upgrade, go for a dSLR. Another thing to watch out for though, is that with the D40, D40x, and D60, which are within your budget, they only take Nikon AF-S type lenses (those with a built in autofocus motor). That sounds confusing, but what it essentially means is that you are limited to newer Nikon lenses, or much newer third party lenses, rather than being able to pick up old Nikkor AF-D lenses and older third party (Tamron, Sigma etc) for less cash. On a better current body (D90, D300), you could do this, or on a secondhand older body (D80, D200, even a D50) you could do this. Nikon have slightly crippled their low-end offerings, which makes the bodies cheap but the expansion of kit at a later date much more expensive. I may come back and edit this later as I wrote it quickly and it might be a bit esoteric. HTH

Interesting (well, marginally).
I was hooked the first time I rode fixed, coming from a geared road bike (so not SS). I also rode it brakless the first time (test ride round the block) so had no choice but to brake with my legs. I may get teh flamez, but I really think this helped me become accommodated to fixed much more quickly, otherwise it might have just felt like riding an irritating road bike.
Still, I'd keep at it (if you want to, that is. If you don't want to, you'll never have the right attitude to learn to like it) -

Hey guys.
Just made a new prototype due to a few comments from James.
James you are welcome to try the old version but it might be worth waiting as the new ones are MUCH better. I'm going to go down the sew-myslef route so they will be ready as soon as I can get my hands on an industrial sewing machine on t'bay.Next week probably.
Thanks for the interest.
Again, any update on these? They look great!

Ummmm. What have you done there?
Aerospoke took priority over a frame, did it.that's what i was thinking. it's like a flawless diamond set in an Elizabeth Duke gold band. Except the flawless diamond is arrospok :s
No, but it was going cheap and I like them. The frame was given to me free, which kickstarted my fixed gear project. I had no intention of riding fixed before that, as I'm really a complete roadie.
Indeed, that money could have been better spent on much more important bike components. For me 'spoks are nearly synonymous with anti-porn.
I will upgrade the components in time, of course, and there's nowt much wrong with them at the moment considering this isn't supposed to be a 'best bike', which I constructed for barely any money...and as for anti-porn, each to their own, innit.
That said i hope you enjoy your ride.
And I do, very much. Forced to ride geared today as rear tyre is fecked, very very weird feeling already.

Nice idea this, I kind of just thrust myself into the introductions to you lot at Souths on Monday, probably because I've met cyclists (and photographers, so more generally, people) off other forums before, so I'm fairly used to it!
I'd like to come down though, maybe I'll make polo not this Sunday but the one following! -

spotted on the ride home last night from Stockwell to home, Asian guy with flowing hair on green spankster wearing blue shorts, fixed with two brakes. I quite enjoyed playing tag with you all the way home, wish I'd said hello at Tooting Broadway lights now.
Mate of mine from CycleChat! He knows you've posted this by the way, someone spotted it and alerted him :)
